Ata al-Khurasani narrates: I came to Madinah and went to the daughter of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), and she related the story of her father. She said that when Allah Almighty revealed to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) this verse: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Surah al-Hujurat: 2] and this verse: "Indeed, Allah does not love everyone who is arrogant and boastful" [Surah Luqman: 18], my father sat in his house and began to weep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not find him in the gathering and asked about him. He came and said: I am a man with a loud voice, and I fear that my deeds may have been nullified. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you will live a praiseworthy life, die a martyr's death, and Allah will admit you into Paradise in peace." His (peace and blessings be upon him) words were: 'Bal ta'ishu hamidan, wa tamutu shahidan, wa yudkhiluka Allahu al-jannata bi-salam' (Rather, you will live praiseworthy, die a martyr, and Allah will admit you into Paradise in peace). Then, when he was martyred in the Battle of Yamamah alongside Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), a Muslim saw him in a dream. He said in the dream: "When I was killed, a Muslim man took off my armour and hid it at the farthest end of the army camp, and it is still with him. He has turned a cooking pot upside down over the armour and placed a camel saddle on the pot. Go to the commander Khalid and inform him, and beware of dismissing it as merely a dream and letting it be lost. And when you reach Madinah, go to the caliph of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and tell him that I owe such-and-such a debt, which should be paid, and that such-and-such slave of mine is free. And beware of dismissing it as merely a dream and letting it be lost." The narrator says: That man went to Khalid bin al-Walid and informed him, and he found the situation just as he had been told. Then he came to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him, and he carried out his will. We do not know of anyone whose will was carried out in this way, on the basis of a dream, after his death, except Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Mention of the virtues of Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih" by virtue of the preceding narrations, and this chain is "strong" on account of 'Ata' al-Khurasani (Ibn Abi Muslim). Technical note / Identification of Companions: The daughter of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas is a "female Companion", because in some narrations of the hadith she said: "I heard my father saying", and then she related the incident. Ibn Abi 'Asim, Abu Nu'aym and Ibn al-Athir counted her among the Companions. Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la narrated it in "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (as cited in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 3721) and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (251), and by way of him al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq" (332), through Ahmad bin 'Isa al-Misri from Bishr bin Bakr, with this same chain. Abu Ya'la added in his narration that Thabit also said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! A verse has been revealed to you: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ﴾ (Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful), yet by Allah, I love beauty (jamal) and I would like to become the chief of my people. It was also recorded by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1921) and "al-Jihad" (225), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1320) and Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (519) by way of al-Walid bin Muslim; by Ibn Abi 'Asim (3399), al-Ruyani (1002) and Abu Nu'aym (8091) by way of Sadaqah bin Khalid; and by al-Bayhaqi (6/356) by way of al-Walid bin Mazyad al-Bayruti. All three (al-Walid, Sadaqah and al-Walid bin Mazyad) narrate it from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir. Technical note: Al-Walid bin Muslim stated explicitly in his narration that the daughter of Thabit bin Qays heard this report from her father herself. Al-Walid bin Muslim and Sadaqah also narrated, like Bishr bin Bakr, the addition (about beauty and leadership) that is in Abu Ya'la's narration. Linguistic note: The word "al-burmah" means "al-qidr" (a cooking pot).
(6838). Linguistic note: The word "al-khatan" is a noun that is used both for a daughter's husband (son-in-law) and for a wife's father (father-in-law); and Abu al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) was the husband of Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The author (al-Hakim) will mention the biography of Abu al-'As bin al-Rabi' again before hadith number (6838).
