أخبرني أحمد بن محمد بن إسماعيل بن مِهْران، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا ابن أبي عُمر، حدثنا سفيان، عن الزُّهري، عن عُبيد بن السَّبّاق، عن زيد بن ثابت قال: لما قُتِل سالمٌ مولى أبي حُذيفةَ قالوا: ذهبَ رُبعُ القرآنِ (1). صحيحٌ على شرط الشيخين.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, was martyred (in the Battle of Yamamah), the Companions said: Today a quarter of the knowledge of the Qur'an has departed.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs.

(1) إسناده صحيح. سفيان: هو ابن عيينة، والزُّهري: هو محمد بن مسلم بن عُبيد الله. وانظر رواية إبراهيم بن بشار عن سفيان بن عيينة عند أبي بكر القَطيعي في زياداته على "فضائل الصحابة" لأحمد بن حنبل (591)، وأبي العباس أحمد بن المفرِّج الأُموي في "مشيخته البغدادية" (23).
