(3). Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his teachers that Salim (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah, was originally the slave of an Ansari woman, Thubaytah bint Ya'ar, who was married to Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Hudhayfah adopted him, and so he used to be called Salim bin Abi Hudhayfah. But when this verse of the Qur'an was revealed: "Call them by (the names of) their (real) fathers" [Surah al-Ahzab: 5], he came to be called Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah. He was martyred in the Battle of Yamamah in the year 12 AH, and on the battlefield his head was found at the feet of Abu Hudhayfah, or the feet of Abu Hudhayfah at his head. Musa bin Uqbah says that his real name was Salim bin Ma'qil and that he was from Istakhr (in Persia).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Lashinah", whereas the correct name is "Thubaytah" (al-Daraqutni, "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" 1/213). Note / Clarification: There are other views regarding her name as well, such as 'Amrah or Salma.
Reference / Source: (2) In al-Waqidi's "al-Maghazi" (1/160) and al-Baladhuri's "Ansab al-Ashraf" (9/372) it is stated explicitly that Salim (may Allah be pleased with him) was the client of Thubaytah bint Ya'ar and was martyred at al-Yamamah. This shows that al-Shadhakuni is not alone in this narration (from al-Waqidi).
Note / Clarification: (3) Imam al-Zuhri and Mus'ab bin al-Zubayr also gave this same name, and Musa bin 'Uqbah only received it from al-Zuhri.
