Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5071

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that one night I was late in coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after the Isha prayer. When I came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Where were you?" I said: I was listening in the mosque to the recitation of a man from among your Companions; I have not heard a melodious voice and recitation like his from anyone else among your Companions. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and I went along with him, until he listened to his recitation. Then he turned to me and said: "This is Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah. Praise be to Allah, who has brought forth in my Ummah a person of such excellence as him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it with these words. However, they both agreed on recording the narration of Ubaydullah from Nafi' from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Muhajirun came from Makkah to Madinah, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, used to lead them in prayer, because he had the most knowledge of the Qur'an among them.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The hadith is "qawi" (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrators are thiqah, 'Abd al-Rahman bin Sabit frequently narrates with "irsal", and his hearing from 'A'ishah is not established. Ibn al-Mubarak and (in one narration) Ibn Numayr narrated it as "mursal", so it being mursal is the more likely view.
Grading: Despite this, Imam al-Dhahabi and Ibn Kathir declared its "mawsul" (connected) chain "jayyid" (good).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This marfu' hadith has another route as well, whose narrators are thiqah; so when the chains are combined, then, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said, declaring it sahih is not far-fetched.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah (1338) narrated it from al-'Abbas bin 'Uthman al-Dimashqi, via al-Walid bin Muslim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (42/25320) narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Numayr (from Hanzalah bin Abi Sufyan).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam al-Bazzar (215) narrated via Ibn Jurayj from Ibn Abi Mulaykah from 'A'ishah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard Salim's recitation (at night) and said: "All praise is for Allah who has made among my Ummah one like him."

Note / Clarification: (2) Only Imam al-Bukhari (692) recorded this narration, not Imam Muslim.
