Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5059

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Mu'awiyah went to Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah and found him weeping. He asked: "What makes you weep? Is it some pain, or greed for the world?" He replied: "Not at all; rather, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) make a covenant with me." I asked: What was it? He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "Perhaps you will live to see a time when people will form factions (for the sake of the world), and you will be among them." And (I weep because) I have certainly been among them.
There is a glaring error (wahm) in this hadith, namely that Sayyiduna Abu Hudhayfah bin Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred before Mu'awiyah accepted Islam. In fact, Mu'awiyah said this to his uncle Abu Hashim bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah on the occasion of the Battle of Siffin.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts it has mistakenly been written "Abi Zur'ah bin 'Amr", whereas "Abu Zur'ah" is the kunyah of 'Amr bin Jabir himself (the correct name is Abu Zur'ah 'Amr bin Jabir).

Grading: (3) This report is "hasan", but with the mention of Abu Hashim bin 'Utbah instead of Abu Hudhayfah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is weak because of the weakness of Ibn Lahi'ah and his teacher Abu Zur'ah 'Amr bin Jabir. The correct position is that this story is about Abu Hashim bin 'Utbah, and that "Samurah bin Sahm" should be mentioned in it, as will be explained later.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/219), Ahmad (24/15664), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (565), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (557), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (346), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 864) and "Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm" (1354) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (67/288) narrated it via Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, and Ahmad (24/15665), al-Tirmidhi (2327) and al-Nasa'i (9724) via 'Abd al-Razzaq, both of them from Sulayman bin Mihran al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, who said: Mu'awiyah entered upon his maternal uncle Abu Hashim bin 'Utbah to visit him in his illness, and he mentioned it.
Details of the narration: The marfu' wording (in the version of Abu Mu'awiyah) is: "O Abu Hashim! Perhaps you will live to see wealth that will be given to people, but of amassing wealth, a servant and a mount in the path of Allah are enough for you."

Note / Clarification: (1) That is, at the time when Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet been given authority over Syria, because he became governor of Syria in the caliphate of 'Umar about 6 or 7 years after the Battle of al-Yamamah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts of al-Mustadrak he is called "khal" (maternal uncle), which is apparently a slip of the pen, because Abu Hashim was not a full brother of his mother Hind.
Note / Clarification: It is also possible that Mu'awiyah called him maternal uncle out of respect, because of his greater age.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Imam al-Hakim made a "wahm" (error) here, because Abu Hashim died before the Battle of Siffin, during the caliphate of 'Uthman, when Mu'awiyah was the governor of Syria.
