Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (1) Likewise Ibn Ishaq mentioned the brotherhood (mu'akhah) established between Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi and 'Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with them), as Ibn Sa'd reported in "al-Tabaqat" (3/45), and all the biographers of the Sirah after them agree on this. (4935). Note / Clarification: His taking part in the Battle of Badr will be mentioned from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr later at number (5037), and has passed earlier at number (4935). 1/ 678. Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq too counted him among those who took part in Badr, in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/678). (2025). Reference / Source: Likewise al-Zuhri mentioned it, as in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (345), and al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (before hadith 2025). 2/ 168 - 170. Reference / Source: As for Marthad bin Abi Marthad being made commander of the expedition on the day of al-Raji', Ibn Ishaq reported it from 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah, in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (2/168-170). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) contradicted them in al-Bukhari (4086), mentioning that their commander at that time was 'Asim bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). 12/ 213. Important point: Imam al-Suhayli preferred this view (the command of 'Asim bin Thabit), as Ibn Kathir reported from him in "al-Fusul" (p. 153), and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also declared it the stronger view in "Fath al-Bari" (12/213). Reference / Source: Whereas al-Waqidi in "al-Maghazi" (1/355) and Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (2/51) mentioned both views without preferring either.
