Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5035

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar that Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi, Kannaz bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), the ally of Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, died in Madinah during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), in the year 12 AH, while some other historians say that he was martyred at Ajnadayn.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts an extra phrase "wa kana Marthad mat" (and Marthad died) has appeared here, which was inserted by mistake. The correct position is that the one who died in Madinah during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Marthad Kannaz bin Husayn al-Ghanawi himself, not his son Marthad, because Marthad had already been martyred on the day of al-Raji' in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Reference / Source: (3) His scribe Muhammad bin Sa'd narrated it from al-Waqidi in "al-Tabaqat" (3/47), with the addition that he was 66 years old at the time. Mus'ab al-Zubayri and Ibrahim al-Hizami also agreed with this, as will come later at numbers (5036, 5038). Ibn Rustah is Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Dabbi, and Sulayman bin Dawud is al-Shadhakuni.
