It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Khaybar, Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) also returned from Abyssinia at the same time. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met him and kissed his forehead, then said: "By Allah, I do not know which makes me happier: the conquest of Khaybar or the arrival of Ja'far?"

Explanation & Benefits

(4295). Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrih", while the present chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of al-Hasan bin al-Husayn al-'Urani. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, Abu Ghassan al-Nahdi corroborated him, as has passed under number (4295). Technical note / Defect ('illah): These two (al-Hasan al-'Urani and Abu Ghassan) were contradicted by 'Ali bin Mushir [Ibn Abi Shaybah: 8/ 621, Abu Dawud (5220) and al-Marasil: (491)], 'Abdullah bin Numayr [Ibn Sa'd: 4/ 32], and Sufyan al-Thawri [Ibn Sa'd and al-Bayhaqi: 7/ 101]. All three narrated it from Ajlah > al-Sha'bi as "mursal". The narration of Ibn Mushir is abridged, containing only the story of receiving Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) and kissing his forehead. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ajlah has also been contradicted in making the hadith "connected" (wasl) by mentioning Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him); he was contradicted by narrators more trustworthy and more eminent than him (as in the next route), who narrated it from al-Sha'bi as "mursal", and this is what is correct, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mujalid bin Sa'id also differed [in al-Bayhaqi: 7/ 101 and Shu'ab al-Iman: (8561)]: he narrated it from 'Amir al-Sha'bi > 'Abdullah bin Ja'far bin Abi Talib in abridged form, and Mujalid is "da'if". Reference / Source: This narration is narrated in full from the hadith of 'Abdullah bin Ja'far in al-Bazzar (2249) through the route of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk > 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Mulaykah > Isma'il bin 'Abdullah bin Ja'far > his father. Technical note / Jarh wa ta'dil: And 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Mulaykah is agreed to be weak, and he is "munkar al-hadith". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: But a supporting report for this hadith is the hadith of Abu Juhayfah, which is in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir": (1470) and 22/ (244), "al-Awsat": (2003) and "al-Saghir": (30). Grading: And its chain is "hasan". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for (the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him)) meeting him and kissing him between his eyes (on the forehead), without the statement "I do not know at which of the two …", is the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), which is in Ibn Abi al-Dunya's "al-Ikhwan": (123), Abu Ya'la's "Mu'jam": (21) and elsewhere. Grading: But its chain is weak.
