Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4991

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that we were returning from a journey, and at Dhu al-Hulayfah people came out to welcome us; the young men of the Ansar used to come out to welcome (travelers). There they met Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr, and people informed him of the death of his wife, so he covered himself with his sheet and began to weep. I said to him: Subhan Allah! You are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and you have such a high standing in Islam, yet you are weeping over a woman? He removed the sheet from his head and said: You have spoken the truth, by the life of Allah! It befits me not to weep over anyone after Sa'd bin Mu'adh, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him what he said. I asked: What did he (peace and blessings be upon him) say about him? He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Throne of Allah shook at the death of Sa'd bin Mu'adh." Aishah said: At that time he (Usayd) was walking between me and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain has "lin" (softness, weakness) because of 'Amr bin 'Alqamah al-Laythi (the father of Muhammad); his son is alone in narrating from him, no declaration of his reliability is reported from anyone other than Ibn Hibban, and he has been contradicted in the wording of this hadith of his, as will come.
Reference / Source: It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad: 31/ (19095) from Yazid bin Harun, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (7030) recorded its marfu' part separately through the route of 'Abdah bin Sulayman > Muhammad bin 'Amr.
Details of the narration: This hadith has passed in abridged form under number (1816) through the route of 'Abdullah bin Rawh al-Mada'ini > Yazid bin Harun.
Details of the narration: And it will come in full under number (5347) through the route of Sa'id bin Mas'ud > Yazid bin Harun.
Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq recorded it in abridged form in "al-Sirah" [as cited in Sirat Ibn Hisham: 2/ 251]: "'Abdullah bin Abi Bukayr narrated to me from 'Amrah bint 'Abd al-Rahman; she said: 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was returning from Makkah, and Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was with her. He received news of the death of his wife and grieved somewhat. 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: O Abu Yahya! May Allah forgive you; do you grieve over a woman when you have been afflicted with (the loss of) your cousin (Sa'd), for whom the Throne shook?"
Grading: The narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim"; it would be "hasan" were it not that it is apparently "mursal". What appears is that 'Amrah heard it from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), because her narration from anyone other than 'A'ishah is very rare, and she is well known and famous for narrating from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Grading: And its marfu' part about "the shaking of the Throne" is "sahih", and has passed from several Companions.
