Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4985

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik that the one who shot the arrow at Sa'd bin Mu'adh on the day of the Battle of the Trench was Hibban bin Qays Ibn al-'Ariqah of Banu Amir bin Lu'ayy. When he shot the arrow, he said: Take it, and I am Ibn al-'Ariqah. Sa'd said: "May Allah scorch your face in the Fire." Then Sa'd lived for about a month after that wound, until he gave judgment concerning Banu Qurayzah by the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and returned to Madinah. Then his wound burst open and he passed away at night. So Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Who is this for whom the gates of heaven have been opened and for whom the Throne of the Most Merciful has shaken?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Sa'd and found that he had passed away.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (1) Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (there is no harm in them), but it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of "'Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik" in the author's chain is an error. None of the students of Muhammad bin Ishaq mentioned him; even al-Tabari narrated it in "al-Tarikh": 2/ 575 from Salamah bin al-Fadl > Ibn Ishaq > 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah as "mursal", without mentioning 'Abdullah bin Ka'b. Both 'Asim and 'Abdullah are Successors. This mistake is also supported by the fact that Ibn Ishaq himself ["Sirat Ibn Hisham": 2/ 227] quoted, through someone not under suspicion, from 'Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik the statement: "No one struck Sa'd that day except Abu Usamah al-Jushami..."
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham recorded it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah": 2/ 227 from Ziyad bin 'Abdullah al-Bakka'i, al-Daraqutni in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif": 1/ 416 through the route of Ibrahim bin Sa'd, and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/ 441 and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah": 2/ 222 through the route of Yunus bin Bukayr. All three narrated it from Ibn Ishaq > 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah as "mursal", and did not mention 'Abdullah bin Ka'b.
Important point / Research: It appears that 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah heard this story from his grandmother "Rumaythah bint 'Amr", because he narrated from her the story of the time of Sa'd bin Mu'adh's death, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Throne of the Most Merciful shook". It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad: 44/ (26793) and elsewhere, and it will come with the author under number (7102).
Grading: And its chain is "hasan".
