Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4983

Sulayman bin Aban narrates from his father that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr, Sa'd bin Khaythamah and his father both intended to go out with him. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that only one of them should go. So they cast lots, and the lot fell to Sa'd. He went with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Badr and was martyred there. Then his father Khaythamah was martyred the following year on the day of Uhud.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is, Allah willing, "qawi" (strong), as was explained under number (4927).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the mention of Sulayman bin Aban's "father" in this chain is odd, and most likely it is an "error" (wahm), because he is not mentioned in the earlier narration nor in the other sources, nor is he mentioned among the Companions or the Successors. What is well known is that this report is narrated from Sulayman bin Aban bin Abi Hudayr as "mursal".

Technical note / Lineage: (2) This attribution is to "al-Khazraj bin 'Amr", a clan (batn) of al-Aws, not to "al-Khazraj bin Harithah", the brother of Aws.
