Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscript (Z) it was distorted into "Abu Hatim", whereas the correct form is "Abu Hazim", and he is Salamah bin Dinar.
Note / Clarification: (2) In our manuscripts and in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" it was distorted into "'aynahu"; we have corrected (established) it from al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/248, since he narrated this report from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) on account of Muhammad bin Musa al-Basri (who is Muhammad bin Yunus bin Musa al-Kudaymi, and is often attributed to his grandfather), and we have not found a biography of his shaykh Abu Salih 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah al-Tawil.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Sa'd contradicted them in "al-Tabaqat": 3/485 and narrated this same report via Ma'n bin 'Isa > Malik bin Anas > Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, "mursal", which is in "Muwatta' Imam Malik" (narration of Yahya al-Laythi: 2/465 and of Abu Mus'ab: 962), and its narrators are "thiqah". So this is the "preserved" (mahfuz) narration, and al-Kudaymi or his shaykh erred. And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, it has supporting reports through which it may become "hasan", if Allah wills; this is why Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Tamhid": 24/94: "This hadith is well known and familiar among the biographers."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/248 from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Anbari narrated it in "al-Zahir": 2/359-360 from Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah Abi Salih al-Tammar al-Tawil al-Basri (the companion of Sulayman bin Harb), from Isma'il bin Qays, from Makhramah bin Bukayr, from Abu Hazim, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr, in "al-Isti'ab": p. 280, mentioned a supporting report for it from the narration of Rubayh bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Sa'id al-Khudri, from his father, from his grandfather (Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him)); but in it he mentioned that the man who went looking for Sa'd bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) was Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note: However, Ibn 'Abd al-Barr did not mention (omitted) his chain up to Rubayh; if his chain up to Rubayh is sound, the chain of this narration is "hasan", and it would be the soundest chain of this report. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, it is supported by the narration of Ibn Abi Sa'sa'ah that comes after it; its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), but it is "munqati'" (broken).
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi narrated it in "al-Maghazi": 1/293 from his shaykhs, but he mentioned in his narration that the one who looked for Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: it is also said that it was Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Lexicon: "Al-shufr" means the edge of the eyelid.
