Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4956

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Hamzah was martyred, his sister Sayyidah Safiyyah came looking for him, not knowing what had happened to her brother. On the way she met Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr. Ali said to al-Zubayr: "Tell your mother." Al-Zubayr said to Ali: "No, you tell your paternal aunt." Sayyidah Safiyyah asked: "What has happened to Hamzah?" The two of them made it appear that they did not know. Then she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that her mind may be overcome (by the shock)." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on her chest and made du'a, and she said, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return)," and wept. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood over Sayyiduna Hamzah, who had been mutilated, and said: "Were it not for fear of the women's grief, I would have left him until he was raised from the bellies of the birds and the beasts." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the funeral prayer for the martyrs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would place Hamzah with nine martyrs and say seven takbirs over them; then those nine would be lifted away while Hamzah remained there. Then another nine would be brought and seven takbirs would be said over them too, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with all the martyrs.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The manuscripts have "yu'tu", whereas the text we have established agrees with the sources of takhrij.

Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if bi-marrah" (extremely weak). Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, although "saduq" (truthful), had a poor memory. And his shaykh Yazid bin Abi Ziyad (al-Hashimi, their client) was declared weak by the majority; his memory deteriorated in old age, and when he was prompted he would accept the prompting. In this narration he is alone in some wordings and was contradicted in others.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd: 3/12, Ibn Abi Shaybah: 14/404, al-Bazzar: (1796), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar": (4910) and "Ma'ani al-Athar": 1/503, al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir": (2935), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra": 4/12 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/287, and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam": 3/181-182, through various routes from Ahmad bin 'Abd Allah bin Yunus (who, with the author, is attributed to his grandfather), with this same chain. Al-Tahawi confined himself to mentioning the funeral prayer over the martyrs of Uhud.
Reference / Source: In brief, with the story of the prayer over the martyrs of Uhud, it was narrated by Ibn Majah: (1513), and al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar": (4909) and "Ma'ani al-Athar": 1/503 via Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Numayr, and by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir": (2936) via Yazid bin Mihran, both from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash with this chain; but the number of takbirs is not mentioned in it.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd: 3/14, Ibn Abi Shaybah: 3/403 and 12/291, and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra": 4/13 narrated it in brief via Muhammad bin Fudayl, from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Harith al-Hashimi, "mursal", with these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over Hamzah and said nine takbirs, then another (body) was brought and he said seven takbirs over it, then another was brought and he said five, until he finished with all of them, except that it was always an odd number (witr)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration indicates "idtirab" (inconsistency) on the part of Yazid bin Abi Ziyad in both the chain and the text.
Reference / Source: Without the story of Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib, al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir": (11051) via Ahmad bin Ayyub bin Rashid al-Basri, from 'Abd al-A'la bin 'Abd al-A'la, from Muhammad bin Ishaq (Muhammad bin Ka'b and al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah > Miqsam and Mujahid > Ibn 'Abbas).
Details of the narration: This narration mentions praying over the martyrs one by one, with Hamzah alongside each of them, until "seventy-two (72)" prayers were offered over him and the other martyrs; and this narration mentions "nine" takbirs in the prayer.
Technical note / Criticism and accreditation (al-jarh wa al-ta'dil): In any case, Ibn Hibban mentioned Ahmad bin Ayyub in "al-Thiqat" and said: "He sometimes narrates odd (gharib) reports", while al-Haythami declared him weak in "Majma' al-Zawa'id": 6/120.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Of this, only the story of the prayer was narrated from Ibn Ishaq by Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i ["Sirat Ibn Hisham": 2/97] and Yunus bin Bukayr ["al-Sunan al-Kubra" of al-Bayhaqi: 4/13]. Al-Bakka'i said: "Someone whom I do not suspect narrated to me", and Yunus said: "A man from among my companions narrated to me, from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas." It mentions the prayer over Hamzah together with each martyr, and that the takbirs were "seven".
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi said: "This is weak; when Muhammad bin Ishaq does not name the one from whom he narrates (leaving him unnamed), his narration is not welcomed (not reliable)."
Reference / Source: Also without the story of Safiyyah, it was narrated by 'Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "al-'Ilal": (5773), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'": (322), al-Daraqutni in "al-Sunan": (4209), Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi in "al-Mukhallisiyyat": (1965) and al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul": (570) via Isma'il bin 'Ayyash, from 'Abd al-Malik bin Humayd bin Abi Ghaniyyah; and by al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah": (1724) via al-Hasan bin 'Umarah; both from al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah > Mujahid > Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Both of them mentioned "ten" takbirs.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Isma'il bin 'Ayyash is "mudtarib al-hadith" (inconsistent) when narrating from non-Syrians (as al-Daraqutni said), and Ibn Abi Ghaniyyah is a Kufan. Some narrations also contain hesitation: "from Ibn Abi Ghaniyyah or someone else". When 'Abd Allah asked his father Imam Ahmad, he said: "This is the hadith of al-Hasan bin 'Umarah, not the hadith of Ibn Abi Ghaniyyah." We say: so the hadith goes back to al-Hasan bin 'Umarah, and he is "matruk al-hadith".
Reference / Source: Of it, the mention of the mutilation of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Abu Ja'far al-Nahhas in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh": p. 541 via Abu 'Amr bin al-'Ala' > Mujahid > Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). It adds that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Ansar swore that they would mutilate the polytheists just as they had mutilated Hamzah and the other martyrs on the day of Uhud.
Grading: And its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Were it not for the distress of the women ...." the supporting report is the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), which has passed at no. (1367).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the previous hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also supports it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the mention of the funeral prayer over Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the martyrs of Uhud, the supporting report is the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tahawi's "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar": 1/503 and Ibn Shahin's "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh": (292), but Ibn Shahin made it a narration of 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr from his father (al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him)).
Grading: And its chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: The "mursal narration" of Abu Malik al-Ghifari, which is in Abu Dawud's "al-Marasil": (427) and (435), al-Tahawi: 1/503 and others,
Grading: its narrators are thiqah.
Reference / Source: And the "mursal narration" of 'Amir al-Sha'bi is in Abu Dawud's "al-Marasil": (428),
Details of the narration: but Imam Ahmad narrated it in "Musnad Ahmad": 7/(4414) as "musnad" (connected), from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), although al-Sha'bi did not hear from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); so this report remains "mursal".
Grading: And its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is also reported from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), as has passed at no. (2589),
Grading: but its chain is weak. It also contradicts what is authentically established from him in the two Sahihs and elsewhere: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray (the funeral prayer) over the martyrs of Uhud, as has been explained and referenced; see the commentary on it there.
Details of the narration: As for the story of Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her), Ibn Ishaq [in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, as cited in "Usd al-Ghabah": 6/173] narrated something similar from al-Zuhri, from a group of the Tabi'un, "mursal". But it does not mention Sayyiduna 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); it mentions only al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Meet her (Safiyyah) and send her back, so that she does not see the state of her brother." Al-Zubayr met her and said: O mother! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commands you to go back. She said: Why? The news has reached me that my brother was mutilated, and that was in the path of Allah; we are content with it; I will surely be patient and hope for reward, if Allah wills. When al-Zubayr came and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what Safiyyah said, he said: "Let her be." So she came, looked at Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), said "Inna lillah" (we belong to Allah) and prayed for his forgiveness.
Grading: Likewise, this narration is reported from 'Urwah, from his father al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), "mawsul", in Musnad Ahmad: 3/(1418) and elsewhere, with a "hasan chain", but it has the words that when al-Zubayr told her of the firm resolve of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she stopped; perhaps he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted her after that. And Allah knows best.
