Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4955

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Hamzah when he had been martyred and his body mutilated. He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a sight so painful that never before had his heart been so grieved and shaken. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May the mercy of Allah be upon you. You used to maintain the ties of kinship and do a great deal of good. Were it not for fear of the grief of those after you, it would have pleased me to leave you like this until you were raised from the bellies of the birds and the beasts." Then, standing in that very place, he (peace and blessings be upon him) swore: "By Allah, I will mutilate seventy of them in the same way in return for you." And while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was still standing there, this verse of the Qur'an was revealed: "And if you punish, then punish with the like of that with which you were harmed; but if you are patient, it is indeed better for those who are patient" [Surah al-Nahl: 126], until the end of the surah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) expiated his oath and refrained from what he had intended.

Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Salih al-Murri (Ibn Bashir), though some of its wordings have authentic supporting reports (shawahid).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir": (2937) from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Nadr al-Azdi with this same chain. Besides that, it was narrated by Ibn Sa'd: 3/12, al-Bazzar: (9530), Ibn al-Mundhir in his "Tafsir": (1065), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar": 3/183, Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat": (169-171) and (254), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah": (1725), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir": (2937), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil": 4/63, Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi in "al-Mukhallisiyyat": (1967), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah": (1830) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah": 3/288 and 289, al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman": (9253), al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul": (571), Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani in "Siyar al-Salaf": pp. 354-355, Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam": 3/182 and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas in "'Uyun al-Athar": 2/29, through various routes from Salih bin Bashir al-Murri.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the mention of the polytheists' mutilation (muthlah) of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) there are supporting reports, which were mentioned under the previous hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Were it not for the grief of those after you ...." there is a supporting report in the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), which has passed with the author at nos. (1367), (2595) and (4948), and its chain is "hasan".
Details of the narration: And another supporting report is from the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), which comes after it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) oath that he would mutilate a number of the polytheists as they had mutilated Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the revelation of the verse about it, the supporting report is the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Abu Ja'far al-Nahhas's "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh": p. 541 and al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir": (11051) with "two hasan chains", but its wording is: "I will mutilate thirty (of them)."
