It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, the best of all creation, when Allah gathers them (on the Day of Resurrection), are the Messengers, and the best of people after the Messengers are the martyrs, and the best of the martyrs is Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about this and said: "The chief of the martyrs is Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib."

Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) on account of 'Ali bin Hazawwar and al-Asbagh bin Nubatah, since both are "matruk al-hadith"; also, there is weakness in Muhammad bin Sulayman al-Asbahani. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of the hadith, "The chief of the martyrs is Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib", is also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), as passed at no. (2589) and will come at no. (4945), and also from Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), as will be explained there. Technical note / Narrator identification: Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani (in the chain) is Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman Fayruz. Reference / Source: This hadith of Sayyiduna 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was narrated by Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir": (2958) from 'Ali bin Sa'id al-Razi, from Abu Usamah 'Abd Allah bin Usamah, with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was also narrated by Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat": (256), and via him by Kamal al-Din Ibn al-'Adim in "Bughyat al-Talab fi Tarikh Halab": 4/1927, through 'Amr (also said: 'Umar) bin Bazi', from 'Ali bin Hazawwar, with this chain.
