Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4935

It is narrated from Urwah that those from Banu Hashim bin Abd Manaf who took part in the Battle of Badr are: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, Ali bin Abi Talib, Zayd bin Harithah, Anasah the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Kabshah, Abu Marthad, and his son Marthad.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable), as explained under no. (4378).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The narrator) Abu 'Ulathah is Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Khalid al-Harrani (later al-Misri), and (the narrator) Abu al-Aswad is Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman, known as "the orphan of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr" (Yatim 'Urwah).
Details of the narration: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in separate parts (mufarraqan) in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir": at (no. 780) with the mention of "Anasah", the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); at (no. 2915) with the mention of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib; at (no. 4649) with the mention of Zayd bin Harithah; in volume 19 (no. 432) with the mention of Abu Marthad (Kannaz bin Husayn al-Ghanawi); and in volume 20 (no. 773) with the mention of Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi.
Reference / Source: The mention of 'Ali bin Abi Talib's (may Allah be pleased with him) participation in Badr was recorded by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" after (no. 1806), and via him by Ibn 'Asakir (42/70).
Note / Clarification: At no. (7024), via Hisham bin 'Urwah from his father, there will come the mention that Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) returned on the day of Badr with the good news of the Muslims' victory, and more than one of the biographers (ahl al-siyar) narrated the like of it, as will be explained under no. (5015).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among those who agreed with 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr (that the above-mentioned men took part in Badr) are: Imam al-Zuhri in Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (no. 345), Ibn Ishaq as in "Sirat Ibn Hisham" (1/677-678), and al-Waqidi in his book "al-Maghazi" (1/24 and 153).
Important point: The participation of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib and 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Badr is "mutawatir" (so widely reported that denial is impossible), and hidden from no one.
