Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4932

It is narrated from Ja'dah bin Hubayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The best of people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them, then those who come after them; then the last ones will be the worst (in decline)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic through supporting reports), and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable). However, there is disagreement about the companionship of Ja'dah bin Hubayrah, though he did have the honour of ru'yah (seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), because he is the son of Hubayrah bin Abi Wahb, who fled to Najran in the year of the Conquest of Makkah and died a polytheist, and Islam separated him from Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib (Ja'dah's mother). So there is no doubt that Ja'dah was born before or shortly before the Conquest of Makkah. This is why al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (1/527): "As for his having seen (the Prophet), that is true, because he was born in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he is the son of the daughter of his paternal uncle, and Umm Hani's special closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is well known."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We (the editors) say: the explicit statement here in the narration that Ja'dah "heard" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is certainly a "wahm" (error), because none of the students of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah mentioned his hearing this report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even though among those students are great hadith masters, greater and more eminent than the narrator who narrates it from him here. Likewise, Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn narrated it from Dawud bin Yazid al-Awdi (the brother of Idris bin Yazid, the father of 'Abd Allah bin Idris), from his father, from Ja'dah, and he too did not mention hearing from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is another disagreement about the identity of Ja'dah. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab", followed by Imam al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (4/566) and al-'Ala'i in "Jami' al-Tahsil", held that this Ja'dah is "Ibn Hubayrah al-Ashja'i", not "al-Makhzumi, the son of Umm Hani'". However, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "al-Isabah" (1/483): "But I have not seen anyone who recorded it say 'al-Ashja'i'. Rather, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Ahmad bin Mani', Ibn Abi 'Asim, al-Baghawi, al-Bawardi, Ibn Qani' and al-Tabarani recorded this hadith in the biography of Ja'dah bin Hubayrah al-Makhzumi, and in Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah it comes as 'Ja'dah bin Hubayrah bin Abi Wahb', and that is al-Makhzumi; so it seems Ibn 'Abd al-Barr erred in making him someone else." We (the editors) say: al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar likewise attributed to Ibn Abi Shaybah that he named him "Ja'dah bin Hubayrah bin Abi Wahb" in his Musannaf, and before al-Hafiz, Mughultay said the same in "Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal"; yet in the extant copies of "al-Musannaf" (including the 'Awwamah edition and the al-Luhaydan and al-Jum'ah edition) the addition "bin Abi Wahb" is not present; perhaps it is an addition by copyists in some copies, and Allah knows best. In any case, the placing of this hadith by the authors of books on the Companions in the biography of Ja'dah al-Makhzumi still stands, and to this add the statement of Abu Hatim al-Razi in his son's book "al-Marasil", where Abu Hatim, after mentioning this hadith, said: "Ja'dah bin Hubayrah is a Tabi'i, and he is the son of the sister of 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Important point: Moreover, Imam al-Hakim in "Tarikh Naysabur" denied that he (Ja'dah) saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as in Mughultay's "Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal" (3/197), and this is strange, since here in "al-Mustadrak" he affirmed his companionship! This hadith is in "Musnad Abi Bakr bin Abi Shaybah", as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (1/4161), and also in his "al-Musannaf" (12/176); but in all the extant copies of "al-Musannaf" (the 'Awwamah edition and the al-Luhaydan and al-Jum'ah edition) three excellent generations (qurun khayyirah) are mentioned, not four.
Details of the narration: It was recorded by 'Abd bin Humayd (no. 383), by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (no. 726) and "al-Sunnah" (no. 1476), by Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (no. 2187) through Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Hadrami, and by Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (no. 1673) via Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah. These four narrators ('Abd bin Humayd, Ibn Abi 'Asim, Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Hadrami and Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah) narrate it from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, like his narration in the "Musnad", i.e. with the mention of four excellent generations.
Details of the narration: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second part (al-sifr al-thani) of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (no. 3650), by Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1/154) through Muhammad bin al-'Abbas al-Mu'addib, and by Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (1/340) via Ibn Abi 'Asim. These three (Ibn Abi Khaythamah, Muhammad bin al-'Abbas and Ibn Abi 'Asim) narrate it from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, like his narration in "al-Musannaf", i.e. with the mention of only three excellent generations.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la recorded it in his "al-Musnad al-Kabir", as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (4161/3), from Zakariyya bin Yahya Zahmawayh al-Wasiti, from 'Abd Allah bin Idris, with this same chain, like Ibn Abi Shaybah's narration in the "Musnad", i.e. with the mention of four excellent generations, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's practice in "al-Matalib" requires, since there he referred back to the preceding narration (i.e. that of Ibn Abi Shaybah and 'Abd bin Humayd). And Allah knows best.
Details of the narration: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (no. 2188) via Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-'Ala', from 'Abd Allah bin Idris, with this same chain, in these words: "The best of people are my generation, then those who come after it, then the last ones are the most base." So here only two excellent generations are mentioned, and this is "gharib" (odd).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It was recorded by Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/347); by Abu Hatim al-Razi in "Musnad al-Wuhdan", as in his son's "al-Marasil" (no. 70); by Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-'Ilal" (no. 2643) from Abu Zur'ah al-Razi; by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Sahabah", as in Mughultay's "al-Ikmal" (3/198), through Ibrahim bin Hani'; and by the author (Imam al-Hakim) in "Tarikh Naysabur", as also in "al-Ikmal" (3/197), via Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Nasr al-Labbad. These five (al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, Abu Zur'ah, Ibrahim bin Hani' and al-Labbad) narrate it from Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from Dawud bin Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Awdi, from his father, from Ja'dah. Abu Hatim al-Razi quoted its wording, saying that his narration has: "The best of people are my generation, in which I am, then those who follow them, then those who follow them, then the fourth is base until the Hour is established." Likewise, the narration of Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn mentions only three excellent generations, like Ibn Abi Shaybah's narration in "al-Musannaf", and the narration of Abu Zur'ah al-Razi does not mention the fourth, base generation. This Dawud bin Yazid is the brother of Idris bin Yazid (the father of 'Abd Allah), so these two brothers narrate from their father, from Ja'dah. But in narrating from Dawud bin Yazid, Yunus bin Bukayr contradicted Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, as found in Musnad al-Bazzar (no. 9661), Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (no. 2643) and al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (no. 5475): Yunus bin Bukayr narrated it from Dawud bin Yazid, from his father, from "Abu Hurayrah" (i.e. he mentioned Abu Hurayrah in place of Ja'dah bin Hubayrah). Abu Zur'ah said (as Ibn Abi Hatim reported): "Abu Nu'aym is a better memorizer than Yunus, and Ja'dah's companionship is not established." He means that he preferred the narration mentioning Ja'dah, and this is supported by the narration of Idris bin Yazid al-Awdi from his father from Ja'dah bin Hubayrah; thus the error of Yunus bin Bukayr is confirmed. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Clarification: The word "ardā" (without hamzah) that comes in the text here actually has the meaning of "ardā'" (i.e. the most inferior and worst), with the hamzah dropped by the rule of "tashil" (softening).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for the mention of the excellence of four generations (qurun) is the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated in Musnad Ahmad (6/3594); but in another narration of his in Sahih Muslim (no. 2533), after the mention of three generations, come the words: "I do not know whether (he (peace and blessings be upon him) said it) at the third or the fourth."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also (in support of four generations) is the hadith of al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (30/18349 and 18447).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the hadith of 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (33/19835), Muslim (no. 2535), al-Nasa'i (no. 4732) and Ibn Hibban (no. 7229), except that in all their narrations other than Ibn Hibban's there is this doubt: 'Imran said: "I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it twice or three times after his generation."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The same also comes in a narration of Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad (38/23024).
Details of the narration: Other narrations of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) mention (explicitly) three excellent generations; these are in Musnad Ahmad (7/3963, 4130, 4173, 4217), al-Bukhari (nos. 2652, 3651, 6429, 6658), Muslim (no. 2533), Ibn Majah (no. 2362), al-Tirmidhi (no. 3859), al-Nasa'i (nos. 5987, 5988, 11750) and Ibn Hibban (nos. 4328, 7222). However, some of his narrations have the wording "three or four", or the words: "I do not know whether he said it at the third or the fourth."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Other narrations of al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) also mention three excellent generations; these are in Musnad Ahmad (30/18348, 18428) and Ibn Hibban (no. 6727).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, other narrations of 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) mention three excellent generations; these are in Musnad Ahmad (33/19820, 19906, 19953), al-Bukhari (nos. 2651, 3650, 6428, 6695), Abu Dawud (no. 4657) and al-Tirmidhi (nos. 2221, 2302). However, in the narrations of most of them are the words that 'Imran said: "I do not know whether he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned two generations after his generation or three." And with some of them the words are: "(I do not remember) whether he mentioned the third or not."
Important point: From all these narrations it can be observed that the mention of three generations in (the context of) "excellence" is more frequent than the mention of four. Also, narrations from other Companions mention only three generations without doubt, such as the hadith of Sayyidah 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Sahih Muslim (no. 2536) and the hadith of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad al-Tayalisi (no. 32). And Allah the Exalted knows best.
