Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an is a weak narrator, and he made several errors (awham) in this narration.
Important point: One error is that he attributed the statement at the start of the hadith to the wife of 'Uthman bin Maz'un, which is wrong. The correct position is that it was said by a woman of the Ansar with whom 'Uthman bin Maz'un stayed after his emigration; her name is "Umm al-'Ala'", and in some narrations she is said to be the mother of Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second error of 'Ali bin Zayd is that he connected the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praising 'Uthman bin Maz'un with the death of his (peace and blessings be upon him) daughter, while he was also inconsistent (idtirab) about the daughter's name, sometimes naming Sayyidah Zaynab and sometimes Sayyidah Ruqayyah (and he mentioned Ruqayyah more often).
Important point: The fact is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said these words praising 'Uthman bin Maz'un at the death of his son Ibrahim, as is established through several routes.
Note / Clarification: Mentioning Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) is certainly an error, because she died at the time of the Battle of Badr, while 'Uthman bin Maz'un took part in Badr; so it is impossible that 'Uthman bin Maz'un was the "farat" (forerunner) of Sayyidah Ruqayyah, when he died after her.
Grading: Imam al-Dhahabi's calling this chain "salih" (acceptable) in the "Talkhis" is not accepted.
Important point: The correct view is what Imam al-Dhahabi himself later said in "Mizan al-I'tidal" (in the biography of 'Ali bin Zayd) and "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (in the biography of Sayyidah Ruqayyah): "This narration is munkar."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at (4/2127) from Yazid bin Harun, and at (5/3103) from 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Abd al-Warith, Hasan bin Musa and 'Affan bin Muslim; all four narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
Details of the narration: All except Yazid bin Harun mentioned Sayyidah Ruqayyah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in the narration in place of Sayyidah Zaynab. All of them also reported, after the story of 'Umar, this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Weep - or: leave them to weep - but beware of the shrieking of Satan (wailing)."
Note / Clarification: The narrators other than Yazid bin Harun also added that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) sat beside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the edge of Sayyidah Ruqayyah's grave and began to weep, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), out of compassion, began wiping Sayyidah Fatimah's eyes with his garment.
Reference / Source: The hadith of Umm al-'Ala' al-Ansariyyah, referred to earlier, was narrated by Imam Ahmad (45/27457), al-Bukhari (1243, 2687, 3929, 7003, 7018), al-Nasa'i (7587) and Ibn Hibban (643) through routes from al-Zuhri, from Kharijah bin Zayd, from Umm al-'Ala'.
Details of the narration: She said that when the Ansar cast lots for housing the Muhajirun, 'Uthman bin Maz'un fell to our share. He fell ill and we nursed him; when he died and we had shrouded him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in. I said: "O Abu al-Sa'ib, may Allah's mercy be upon you; my testimony about you is that Allah has honoured you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you know that Allah has honoured him?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, I do not know." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for 'Uthman, by Allah, certainty (death) has come to him, and I hope good for him; but by Allah, even though I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not know what will be done with me." Umm al-'Ala' said: By Allah, I will never again declare anyone (definitively) pure after him. That saddened me; then I slept and saw in a dream a flowing spring for 'Uthman. I came and told the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "That is his deeds."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In some routes of the hadith of Umm al-'Ala', such as the route of Ma'mar bin Rashid with 'Abd bin Humayd (1593), Ma'mar says: I heard someone other than al-Zuhri say that the Muslims disliked what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about 'Uthman, until, when Sayyidah Zaynab died, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Join our forerunner 'Uthman bin Maz'un." In this narration these words come "mu'dal" (with two narrators missing from the chain).
