Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4928

Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi' narrates from his father that he said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was searching for a burial ground for his Companions. He (peace and blessings be upon him) examined the various outskirts of Madinah, then said: "I have been commanded to (choose) this place," meaning al-Baqi', which used to be called "Baqi' al-Khabkhabah," and "gharqad" (shrubs) grew there in abundance. The first to be buried there was Uthman bin Maz'un. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed a stone at his head and said: "This is the grave of the first of us to go ahead." After that, whenever one of the Muhajirun died and it was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, where shall we bury him?" he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Next to our forerunner, Uthman bin Maz'un."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this name is distorted into "'Abd Allah" (the non-diminutive form), and in manuscript (Z) a tadbib mark (a sign of doubt) is placed over it.
Note / Clarification: The correct name in the text is established from a copy in the margin of manuscript (S).

Grading: Its chain is "wahin" (extremely weak), as Imam al-Dhahabi stated in the "Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for this weakness is Abu Bakr bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Sabrah, who is a "matruk" narrator, and Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal accused him of fabricating hadith. Also, his shaykh 'Asim bin 'Ubayd Allah is weak, and the criticism of the hadith scholars regarding Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi is well known.
Reference / Source: This narration is in Muhammad bin Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/397) via Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There it is "mursal"; its chain does not mention Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him).
Important point: There is a difference of opinion about who, among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), was the first to be buried in Jannat al-Baqi'.
Note / Clarification: For details of this issue, see the earlier hadith no. (4918).
Note / Clarification: The word "al-farat" literally means "the one who goes ahead" or "forerunner" (who arrives first to receive or make arrangements).
