Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4923

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he mentioned the mubarazah (single combat): Utbah bin Rabi'ah killed Ubaydah bin al-Harith in single combat. Utbah struck him on his shin and severed it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had him carried, and he died at al-Safra' on the way back from Badr, and he was buried there.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/131), "al-Dala'il" (3/72) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan" (18357) with al-Hakim's chain up to Ibn Ishaq, who mentioned the story of Badr from Yazid bin Ruman from 'Urwah, and (with a switch of chain, tahwil) from al-Zuhri, Muhammad bin Yahya and others.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Bayhaqi's narration this report comes "mursal"; it has no mention of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari in "Usd al-Ghabah" (1/436 and 4/288), in the account of the Battle of Badr, did not mention Ibn 'Abbas in his chain (Ridwan bin Ahmad from Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What appears is that the mention of Ibn 'Abbas in the narration of al-'Utaridi (from Yunus bin Bukayr) is a "wahm" (error), even though the mention of Ibn 'Abbas is soundly established in narrations other than that of Yunus bin Bukayr, such as the narration of Salamah bin al-Fadl (al-Tabari: 2/427-445) and the narration of Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i (Sirat Ibn Hisham: 1/606-625), both of whom narrate from Ibn Ishaq. And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin 'Ali bin al-Husayn (Imam al-Baqir) agreed with this narration, "mursal", as recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim (Adab al-Shafi'i: pp. 39-40) and Ibn 'Asakir (38/259). Its narrators are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: 'Abd Allah al-Bahi also agreed with it, likewise "mursal" (Ibn Sa'd: 2/21), and there is no harm in its narrators.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This contradicts the narration of Musa bin 'Uqbah from al-Zuhri (in al-Bayhaqi 3/101-114), which says: Hamzah faced 'Utbah, 'Ubaydah faced Shaybah, and 'Ali faced al-Walid. Hamzah killed 'Utbah, 'Ali killed al-Walid, and 'Ubaydah killed Shaybah, while Shaybah struck 'Ubaydah's leg and cut it off; Hamzah and 'Ali rescued him, until he died at al-Safra'. Here 'Ubaydah's opponent is "Shaybah", not "'Utbah". But this narration also contradicts the author's (al-Hakim's) own narration of Musa bin 'Uqbah's report, which comes next, since the author's narration agrees with the narration of Ibn 'Abbas.
Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (12/44): With al-Hakim, via 'Abd Khayr from 'Ali, there is the like of Musa bin 'Uqbah's account (i.e. as it is in al-Bayhaqi, not as the author mentioned it here), and in Abu al-Aswad from 'Urwah there is the same.
Note / Clarification: We say: what al-Hakim has at no. (4943) is "Harithah bin Mudarrib from 'Ali", not "'Abd Khayr from 'Ali". However, in al-Tabarani's al-Kabir (2955) there is, via Husayn al-Ashqar, a narration of 'Abd Khayr from 'Ali in which 'Ubaydah's opponent is made "al-Walid", which agrees with Sunan Abi Dawud (2665). But it contradicts the author's forthcoming narration (Harithah from 'Ali), in which "Shaybah" is mentioned as 'Ubaydah's opponent. And this (the Shaybah account) is what al-Waqidi (al-Maghazi: 1/69) and Ibn Sa'd (2/16) relied on. Ibn Sa'd said: "The established position is that Hamzah killed 'Utbah, 'Ali killed al-Walid, and 'Ubaydah dueled with Shaybah."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Fath" (12/45) counted the narration of Harithah bin Mudarrib from 'Ali (the narration of Abu Dawud) as "the soundest of the narrations", but he (may Allah have mercy on him) overlooked the difference between the wording of the author (al-Hakim) and that of Abu Dawud.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Safra'" is the name of a valley and a village between Madinah and Badr. The village is today called "al-Wasitah", and it lies 51 kilometres from Madinah on the road to Badr.
Note / Clarification: "Wadi al-Safra'" is one of the valleys of the Hijaz, with many villages. When you leave Madinah for Badr and pass "al-Furaysh", you are at the start of Wadi al-Safra'. (See: Mu'jam al-Ma'alim al-Jughrafiyyah, p. 177.)
