It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that Utbah and Ubaydah exchanged two blows between them, and each of them wounded his opponent. Then Hamzah and Ali attacked Utbah and killed him, and carried back their companion Ubaydah. When he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his leg had been cut off and its marrow was flowing. When they brought Ubaydah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "O Messenger of Allah, am I not a martyr?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Of course (you certainly are)." Then Ubaydah said: "If Abu Talib were alive today, he would know that we are more deserving than him of what he said: 'We will not hand him over (to the enemy) until we are struck down around him, and are heedless of our sons and our wives.'"

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But what is mentioned here, that "'Utbah" was 'Ubaydah's opponent, is a "wahm" (error), and it appears to be from the author (al-Hakim) himself. The evidence is that al-Bayhaqi, in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah", narrated the report with the author's own chain and with another chain from Musa bin 'Uqbah, and there "Shaybah bin Rabi'ah" is mentioned as 'Ubaydah's opponent, not 'Utbah. Since al-Bayhaqi gave no notice of any difference between the two narrations (as he usually does), this shows that the two narrations are identical. And Allah knows best. Note / Clarification: "Karra" means: he turned and came back (to attack). 2/ 64. Note / Clarification: The word "nuslimuhu" (in the nominative) is joined to what is in a previous verse, i.e. "we will not hand him over" (or not forsake him). "Nusarra'" and "nudhhal" are passive forms. (Khizanat al-Adab: 2/64.) Note / Clarification: "Hala'il" is the plural of "halilah", which means wife.
