Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4922

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Umar that the first banner the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) tied was for Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, then the banner of Ubaydah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, which was sent towards Rabigh, which lies between al-Juhfah and Qudayd.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Maghazi al-Waqidi" (1/2) from his shaykhs, and in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (3/15) from al-Waqidi, from Mu'adh bin Muhammad al-Ansari, from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Sa'sa'ah, "mursal". This is also the view of al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (1/371).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This contradicts the view of Ibn Ishaq recorded by al-Tabari (2/403-404) and al-Bayhaqi (al-Dala'il: 3/10-11), where he mentioned that the banner of 'Ubaydah bin al-Harith came first, then that of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib. Ibn Hazm followed him in "Jawami' al-Sirah" (p. 17).
Details of the narration: With the author (al-Hakim) at no. (4964) a narration will come from Ibn Mas'ud (the correct view is that it is from Zirr bin Hubaysh) that: the first banner tied in Islam was for 'Abd Allah bin Jahsh.
Reference / Source: This view is also reported from 'Amir al-Sha'bi, recorded by Ma'mar bin Rashid in "al-Jami'" (19880) and Khalifah bin Khayyat in "al-Tarikh" (p. 62).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Contrary to all of them is the position of Musa bin 'Uqbah and al-Zuhri (as al-Bayhaqi reported in al-Dala'il 5/462-463): that the expedition of 'Ubaydah came first, then that of 'Abd Allah bin Jahsh, then that of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: For Rabigh and al-Juhfah, see the commentary on hadith (1296). "Qudayd" (in the diminutive form) is one of the valleys of the Tihamah region of the Hijaz, crossed by the road from Makkah to Madinah, at about 120 kilometres.
