Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4921

It is narrated from Zaynab bint Nubayt that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) adorned her mother and her maternal aunt with jewellery. The father of the two of them was Abu Umamah As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him), who at the time of his death had entrusted these two girls to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his will. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) adorned them with earrings of raw gold set with pearls. Zaynab said: I saw that jewellery, or some of it.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "jayyid" (good).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain is (only) jayyid on account of "Muhammad bin 'Umarah" (Ibn 'Amr bin Hazm), who is "saduq" and there is no harm in him, and on account of Zaynab bint Nubayt (the wife of Anas bin Malik). Zaynab's companionship or having seen (the Prophet) is not established, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (7/687), which requires that this narration of hers be "mursal". However, a group narrated this report from Muhammad bin 'Umarah and made it Zaynab's narration "from her mother", by which the chain becomes connected (muttasil), as al-Hafiz indicated.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): These four narrate it from Muhammad bin 'Umarah, from Zaynab bint Nubayt, "from her mother". In some of their narrations, Ibn Abi Yahya and Muhammad bin 'Amr joined her (maternal) aunt with the mother, stating that the two of them narrated to Zaynab.
Note / Clarification: "Ri'ath" is the plural of "ra'thah"; it means the jewellery hung from the ear, such as an earring and the like.
Note / Clarification: "Tibr" is any earthly substance or metal that has not yet been worked (shaped); here it is attributed to "gold" to restrict it to that.
