Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is sahih, but as the narration of al-Zuhri from Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group of al-Zuhri's companions (among them Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli, as will come at no. 7685) narrated it this way (mursal). Here Ma'mar bin Rashid is alone in mentioning "Anas" in place of "Abu Umamah", and this is a "wahm" (error) on his part.
General principle: A number of scholars have stated this error decisively, such as Abu Hatim al-Razi (al-'Ilal: 2277), al-'Abbas bin Yazid al-Bahrani (Tarikh Dimashq: 59/392), al-Bazzar (Musnad: 6306), and al-Daraqutni (al-'Ilal: 2619), among others.
Grading: Despite this (error), al-Tirmidhi (2050) graded this narration of Ma'mar bin Rashid "hasan" and Ibn Hibban (6080) graded it "sahih".
Details of the narration: This narration will be repeated by the author (al-Hakim) at no. (8491), via Yahya bin Muhammad bin Yahya from Musaddad, and via Abu al-Muthanna from Muhammad bin al-Minhal, both of them from Yazid bin Zuray'. (Abu al-Muthanna here and in what follows is "Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-'Anbari".)
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Among al-Zuhri's companions, Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Dhi'b is also alone, narrating it with the chain al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah. Ibn Hibban (4825) also graded this sahih, but al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (1/55): it is "shadh".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for this narration is the hadith of Yahya bin As'ad bin Zurarah, which comes with the author at no. (7686), and its narrators are thiqah.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-shawkah" in the hadith means "al-dhubhah" (quinsy, a throat disease), as it comes in the referenced hadith of Yahya bin As'ad. It is an abscess that appears in the throat, blocking it, cutting off the breath, and killing the person.
