Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 49

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three things upon which I swear: Allah will not make the one who has a share (sahm) in Islam like the one who has no share in it; and the shares of Islam are fasting, prayer and charity. And the servant whose protecting friend Allah becomes, He will not hand him over to anyone else on the Day of Resurrection. And whatever people a man loves, Allah will bring him with them. And the fourth is such that, if I were to swear upon it, I hope I would not be sinful: whichever servant Allah conceals in this world, He will also conceal him in the Hereafter." Then Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When you hear a hadith like this which Urwah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), memorise it (well).
Imam Bukhari recorded from Shaybah al-Hadrami, and said in "al-Tarikh" that he is also called al-Khudri; he heard from Urwah and Umar bin Abd al-Aziz. This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two of them (the two Shaykhs) did not narrate it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "Hibban" with the letter "ba'", and it is left undotted in (S). However, it is repeatedly mentioned in al-Mizzi's "Tahdhib al-Kamal", al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" and elsewhere with two dots below ("Hayyan"), so on that basis we have established it with "ya'", and Allah the Exalted knows best. He is "Abu Ja'far al-Tammar al-Basri"; al-Daraqutni said in "Su'alat al-Hakim lahu" (192): "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscripts (Z) and (S) it is "'abdun" (nominative, as the subject), and in (B) "'abdan" (accusative, as the object).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The text between square brackets had dropped out of the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" available to us, and it is indispensable; we have restored it from al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9014), where he narrated it from his shaykh al-Hakim with both of his chains.

Grading: (2) It is "sahih" on the strength of its routes and supporting reports, and this chain is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Shaybah al-Hadrami" — also called al-Khudri, after Khudr, a tribe of Qays 'Aylan — was mentioned by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh" 4/ 243 and by Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 4/ 336, and neither transmitted any criticism or praise of him; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" 6/ 445. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Taqrib": "maqbul" (acceptable), meaning when corroborated, otherwise he is layyin al-hadith (soft in hadith). Al-Dhahabi declared him majhul (unknown) in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", and al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri declared this chain "jayyid" (good) in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/ 25121) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain; see its full takhrij and supporting reports there.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/ 25271) and al-Nasa'i (6316) also narrated it by way of 'Affan, from Hammam bin Yahya; in al-Nasa'i it is abridged.
Note / Clarification: It will come with the author at (8360).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are narrations from several Companions, as explained in the commentary on "Musnad Ahmad".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) This is how the wording occurs in the original manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", and for that reason al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi objected to it, saying: "No one recorded from him — i.e. Shaybah — except al-Nasa'i, this hadith, and there is uncertainty (jahalah) about him."
Important point: We say: We think it most likely that an old error has occurred in the wording, and that the correct reading is: "al-Bukhari recorded him in 'al-Tarikh' and said: al-Khudri"; with that, the wording is sound, and then there is no objection against him, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
