It is narrated from Sayyiduna Fadalah al-Laythi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I wish to accept Islam, so teach me some of the laws (rulings) of Islam." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the prayer, the month of Ramadan and the times of the prayer. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! You are mentioning times in which I am busy, so teach me something comprehensive." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if you are busy, do not neglect the two 'Asrs ('Asrayn)." I asked: "What are the 'Asrayn?" For this was not the language of my people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fajr and 'Asr."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two of them did not record it. It contains wordings which they did not record through another chain either, and the most beneficial of them is the mention of the laws of Islam, for that is in the narration of Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Rawwad from Alqamah bin Marthad from Yahya bin Ya'mar from Ibn Umar, which is not on the condition of either of them. And in this chain there is a divergence from Hushaym bin Bashir in his narration from Dawud bin Abi Hind which does not harm the hadith; rather, it strengthens it further.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(3302). Grading: (1) The hadith is "hasan"; the chain has an "inqita'" (break) between Abu Harb and Fadalah (the intermediary being Abd Allah bin Fadalah). Al-Hakim, Ibn Hibban and Ibn Hajar graded it "sahih", while al-Dhahabi considered it "munkar". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Nasr bin Asim al-Laythi (Ahmad: 20287), whose narrators are "thiqah", that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted a man's Islam on the condition of praying only two prayers. General principle: Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (in his commentary on al-Bukhari) says: this belongs to the category of "winning hearts" (ta'lif al-qalb) to Islam; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would accept it, and then they themselves would go on to fulfil all its obligations. This is also the view of Imam Ahmad. Note / Clarification: It could also mean: pray the "two 'Asrs" (Fajr and 'Asr) at their best times and the rest as is easy for you (not that only these two are sufficient). This is also the inclination of al-Bayhaqi. Reference / Source: The hadith of Fadalah was recorded by Ahmad (31/ 19024) and Ibn Hibban (1741) by way of Hushaym.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In manuscript (B) it is distorted to "Dawud".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) The author (al-Hakim) presented the chain this way and erred in it, because Alqamah bin Marthad has no narration from Yahya bin Ya'mar; between the two is "Sulayman bin Buraydah". Al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (933) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (8/ 202) narrated it correctly by way of Khallad bin Yahya: from Abd al-Aziz bin Abi Rawwad, from Alqamah bin Marthad, from Sulayman bin Buraydah, from Yahya bin Ya'mar. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan al-Thawri corroborated Abd al-Aziz, as recorded by Ahmad (1/ 374) and Abu Dawud (4697), but he used the words "Ma al-Islam?" (What is Islam?) in it. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim narrated it in his "Sahih" (8) from several narrators by way of Sulayman's brother "Abd Allah bin Buraydah", from Yahya bin Ya'mar, and in it he said: "Tell me about Islam".
