Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: This chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak) because of the author's (al-Hakim's) shaykh Abu Muhammad al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-'Aqiqi, for al-Dhahabi accused him of lying in "al-Mizan". Other thiqah narrators differed with him, narrating this report from Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Ishaq, from his paternal uncle 'Ali bin Ja'far bin Muhammad, from al-Husayn bin Zayd (who is Ibn 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib), from al-Hasan bin Zayd bin al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib, from his father.
Criticism and commendation: This al-Husayn bin Zayd is da'if, and munkar narrations occur in his hadiths; he is one of the narrators of "al-Tahdhib". Likewise al-Hasan bin Zayd bin al-Hasan is disputed; Ibn 'Adi said: His hadiths from his father are more munkar than what he narrates from 'Ikrimah.
Technical note (isolated narration of the text): The second part of the sermon of al-Hasan bin 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), namely his saying: "O people, whoever knows me knows me ..." to the end, is among what one of these two narrators is alone in narrating with this chain.
Objectionability of the text: Although it is also narrated by another route, that route is not worth any regard at all. This statement is "munkar", especially in taking the mentioned verse in that sense, since the surah is Makkan by agreement, and at that time the "Ahl al-Bayt" did not yet exist, because 'Ali bin Abi Talib married Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) only two years after the Hijrah to Madinah.
The correct interpretation: The correct view is to take the verse in the sense in which 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained it, as found in al-Bukhari (3497) and (4818) and elsewhere. He said: "There was no clan of Quraysh with which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have ties of kinship," so he said: "(I ask nothing of you) except that you maintain the ties of kinship between me and you." Ibn 'Abbas said this in reply to Sa'id bin Jubayr when he said: They are the kin of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Verification of the text: As for the first part of the sermon of al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib, it is narrated through chains other than this one in the Musnad of Ahmad and elsewhere, so it is "established" - except for the wording here: "la yasbiquhu al-awwalun bi-'amal" (those before did not surpass him in deeds), whereas the correct wording is: "la yasbiquhu al-awwalun bi-'ilm" (those before did not surpass him in knowledge), as it occurs in the Musnad of Ahmad.
Reference / Sources: The sermon with both its parts was narrated by al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (121) from Abu al-Qasim Kahmas bin Ma'mar, and by Abu al-Faraj al-Asbahani in "Maqatil al-Talibiyyin" (p. 51) from Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Baghandi and Muhammad bin Hamdan al-Saydalani. All three of them (Kahmas, al-Baghandi and al-Saydalani) narrate it from Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Ishaq, from his paternal uncle 'Ali bin Ja'far bin Muhammad, from al-Husayn bin Zayd, from al-Hasan bin Zayd bin al-Hasan, from his father, with this chain.
Reference / Sources: Al-Dulabi also narrated it (122) via Abu 'Abdullah al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin 'Umar bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib, from his father, from Husayn bin Zayd, from al-Hasan bin Zayd bin al-Hasan, but the words "from his father" are not in it. And al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (2155) by way of Sallam bin Abi 'Amrah, from Ma'ruf bin Kharrabudh, from Abu al-Tufayl, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali.
Defect: But this Sallam bin Abi 'Amrah is "wahi al-hadith" (extremely weak).
Reference / Sources: The first part of the sermon of al-Hasan bin 'Ali was narrated by Ahmad (3/ 1719) by way of Sharik bin 'Abdullah al-Nakha'i, al-Nasa'i (8354) by way of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, and Ibn Hibban (6936) by way of Isma'il bin Abi Khalid. All three of them narrate it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Hubayrah bin Yarim, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali.
Details: Another group also narrated it from Abu Ishaq in the same way, whom al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" (3157); among them is Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference and verification: Ahmad (3/ 1720) also narrated this part by way of Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from his grandfather Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr bin Hubshi, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali. Here Abu Ishaq mentioned another narrator, "'Amr bin Hubshi". Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal": The mahfuz (preserved) version is Abu Ishaq's narration from "Hubayrah", though it is possible that Isra'il's version is also "mahfuz", since he is one of the huffaz who narrate from Abu Ishaq, and Abu Ishaq may have taken it from both Hubayrah and 'Amr bin Hubshi.
Conclusion: We say: This part, by the combination of the two routes, is "hasan and established", in sha' Allah.
Reference: It has already passed in the hadith of 'Ali bin Abi Talib at numbers (4479) and (4704) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me and to Abu Bakr on the day of Badr: "With one of you is Jibril and with the other is Mika'il, and Israfil is a mighty angel who is present at the battle and is in the ranks."
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Linguistic explanation: "Al-safra'" (the yellow metal) means gold, and "al-bayda'" (the white metal) means silver.
