(1). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me these words for the witr prayer: 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa-innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta rabbana wa ta'alayt' (O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none can decree against You, and the one whom You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Most High).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading of the chain: This chain is "sahih". Abu al-Hawra' is "Rabi'ah bin Shayban al-Sa'di", Ibn Abi Maryam is "Sa'id bin al-Hakam bin Muhammad bin Salim", and Abu Ishaq is "'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i". Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/ 1721), Abu Dawud (1425, 1426), Ibn Majah (1178), al-Tirmidhi (464) and al-Nasa'i (1446) narrated it through various routes from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is hasan; we know it only by this route ... and we do not know anything from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on qunut in the witr better than this." (744). Reference / Sources: Ahmad (1718) narrated it by way of Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, and Ahmad (1723, 1727) and Ibn Hibban (722, 945) by way of Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj. Both of them (Yunus and Shu'bah) narrate it from Burayd bin Abi Maryam, with this chain. Details: Shu'bah mentioned neither the qunut nor the witr in his narration, but mentioned it in these words: "Al-Hasan said: He (i.e. the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us this supplication." However, in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (2707) and "al-Du'a'" (744), "witr" is mentioned in some narrations from Shu'bah.
