Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4856

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me (this supplication to recite) in the witr prayer, when I raise my head (from bowing) and nothing remains but the prostration, to say: 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa 'afini fiman 'afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta wa ta'alayt' (O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none can decree against You. Indeed, the one whom You befriend is never humiliated. Blessed are You and Most High).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), except that Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abi Kathir differed from Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Uqbah regarding its chain.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim" (acceptable).
Technical note (variation in the chain): However, there is disagreement over Musa bin 'Uqbah in three ways: 1. Here his nephew Isma'il narrated it from him and gave it as (Musa, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali). 2. Yahya bin 'Abdullah bin Salim differed with him and gave it as (Musa, from 'Abdullah bin 'Ali, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali). 3. Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Abi Kathir differed with both of them (as will come with the author right after this) and gave it as (Musa, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Burayd bin Abi Maryam, from Abu al-Hawra', from al-Hasan bin 'Ali).
Preponderance: This third route is the most authentic of the versions from Musa bin 'Uqbah, because a group of Abu Ishaq's students narrated it from him in the same way, and likewise a group narrated it in the same way from Burayd bin Abi Maryam. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Dirayah fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Hidayah" (245): "And this is correct."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (3/ 38) via Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani' and Abu Mansur Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-'Ataki, from al-Fadl bin Muhammad al-Sha'rani, with this chain. He mentioned (in the chain here) "Abu Mansur Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-'Ataki" in place of Abu Sa'id 'Amr bin Muhammad bin Mansur. So it appears that al-Hakim heard it from his three shaykhs.
Technical note / Shudhudh (irregularity): It should be pointed out here that the wording in the hadith: "When I raised my head and nothing remained but the prostration" is "shadh" in the narration of Ibn Abi Fudayk (Muhammad bin Isma'il). For Ibn Mandah narrated it in "al-Tawhid" (338) from Abu 'Uthman 'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Basri, and Abu Bakr Ahmad bin al-Husayn bin Mihran al-Asbahani in his "Fawa'id" (with al-Hakim's takhrij of it, as in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Talkhis al-Habir" 1/ 248) from Muhammad bin Yunus al-Muqri'; both of them (Abu 'Uthman and Ibn Yunus) narrate it from al-Fadl bin Muhammad bin al-Musayyab al-Sha'rani, with this chain. And in it: "This supplication was after the recitation and before the ruku' (bowing)."
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn al-Najjar narrated it in "Dhayl Tarikh Baghdad" (4/ 162) by way of Muhammad bin Yazid al-Asfati, from Abu Bakr bin Shaybah al-Hizami, from Ibn Abi Fudayk, from Musa bin Ya'qub al-Zam'i, from Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah, with this chain. In it too, this supplication is after the recitation and before the ruku'.
Defect: However, here he added a narrator, "Musa bin Ya'qub al-Zam'i", between Ibn Abi Fudayk and Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah, and his mention is not known anywhere except in this route!
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (415) and "al-Sunnah" (375) by way of Isma'il bin Abi Uways, from Ibn Abi Fudayk, from Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah, with this chain. In it the said supplication is after finishing the recitation and before the ruku'. And he did not mention anyone between Ibn Abi Fudayk and Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah.
Reference and verification: Al-Nasa'i (1447) and others narrated it by way of Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Salim, from Musa bin 'Uqbah, from 'Abdullah bin 'Ali, from al-Hasan bin 'Ali. He did not mention the time of the supplication, but added at the end of the supplication: "wa salla Allahu 'ala Muhammadin al-Nabi" (and may Allah send blessings upon Muhammad the Prophet).
Criticism and commendation: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (2/ 154): "This addition in this chain is gharib and not established, because 'Abdullah bin 'Ali is not known." Al-Hafiz 'Abd al-Ghani considered it possible that he is "'Abdullah bin 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali", and al-Mizzi stated this firmly. If it is as they said, then the chain is "munqati'" (broken), because Ibn Sa'd, al-Zubayr bin Bakkar and Ibn Hibban mentioned that his mother was Umm 'Abdullah bint al-Hasan bin 'Ali, and he did not hear from his grandfather al-Hasan bin 'Ali. Rather, it appears that his grandfather died before he was born, because his father Zayn al-'Abidin lived through only about ten years of the life of his uncle al-Hasan. So it is clear that this chain does not meet the condition of "hasan", because of its break or the unknown status of its narrator, and its weakness has not been made up (injibar) by its coming through another route.
