Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4859

Ja'far bin Muhammad narrates from his father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) named Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the seventh day after his birth, and that it was he (peace and blessings be upon him) who derived the name "Husayn" from the name "Hasan." And the narrator mentioned that between (the births of) the two brothers there was only the span of a pregnancy.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "mursal", but its narrators are "thiqah". Ja'far bin Muhammad is "Ibn 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib" (Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq), and Ibn Jurayj is "'Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Makki".
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musannaf 'Abd al-Razzaq" (7979), and through his route al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 304) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (14/ 119-120).
Historical note: Regarding the interval between the births of al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), this narration is more authentic than what Qatadah bin Di'amah said (which will come below at number 4879), that there was an interval of one year and ten months between the two of them. For Muhammad bin 'Ali al-Baqir knew about his own household better than others, so his statement takes precedence.
Reference: Ibn Sa'd (6/ 356), al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (146) and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (before 395) narrated it by way of Abu Damrah Anas bin 'Iyad; and Ibn Sa'd (6/ 356) also narrated it by way of Sulayman bin Bilal and by way of Malik bin Abi al-Rijal. All three of them (Anas, Sulayman and Malik) narrate it from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named Hasan and Husayn on their seventh day, and derived the name Husayn from Hasan." But they did not mention the interval between their births.
