Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4860

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was poisoned several times, and each time he survived its effect, until the last time he was poisoned, in which he died; from the severity of that poison his liver would come out in pieces. When he died, the women of Banu Hashim mourned for him for a month.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Verification of the wording: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word is "yakhtalifu" (with kha'), while in the remaining manuscripts it was left undotted. "Al-ijtilaf" (with jim) means "uprooting" (al-isti'sal). The meaning is that his liver was torn out. This is supported by another narration of the report, which says: "I spat out a piece of my liver."

Grading: This report is "sahih", except for the story of the lamentation over al-Hasan bin 'Ali. In this chain is Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi), who is "da'if", but he is considered for corroboration, and his hadith is written down in the maghazi (military campaigns), the days of the people (history) and their reports, as Imam al-Dhahabi concluded in his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (as explained earlier at number 4060). The narrators below him are some of the transmitters of al-Waqidi's books, as has passed there.
Technical note: Al-Waqidi is not alone in narrating the story of the death of al-Hasan bin 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) by poison; he is alone only in the story of the women of Banu Hashim lamenting over him. Ibn Sa'd (6/ 387) recorded it from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, with this chain.
Reference / Source: The story of his death by poison was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (6/ 386), Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 94) and others by way of 'Abdullah bin 'Awn, from 'Umayr bin Ishaq, who said: I and a companion of mine went in to al-Hasan bin 'Ali to visit him in his illness, and he mentioned something similar.
Grading of the chain: Its chain is "qawi" (strong), and it will come below at number (4876) in abridged form.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (6/ 387) narrated from Abu Harb bin Abi al-Aswad al-Dili and Abu al-Tufayl, who both said: Al-Hasan bin 'Ali said: "I was given poison to drink twice."
