Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction of the text / narrator: In the manuscripts this name has been distorted into "Abu al-Husayn al-Ya'mari", whereas it is in fact "Abu al-Hasan al-'Umari", who appeared correctly in the previous hadith. He is "Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Subayh al-'Umari"; he is called (al-'Umari) because he is a descendant of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), as al-Hakim explained in "Tarikh Naysabur" (according to the abridgement of Khalifah al-Naysaburi, p. 66) in the biography of his father 'Abdullah bin Muhammad. In al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3396) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 509-510), from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, this narration comes with the correct name.
Correction of the text: In the printed edition this word has been distorted into "tamlikuha" (with a feminine pronoun), whereas the pronoun should be masculine (tamlikuhu), because it refers to the "minbar" (pulpit).
Grading: This report is "munkar".
Defect / Variation: In this chain there is disagreement over identifying the shaykh of al-Qasim bin al-Fadl. With the author (al-Hakim) and with most of those who recorded it, his name appears as "Yusuf bin Mazin al-Rasibi", while with al-Tirmidhi (3350) it appears as "Yusuf bin Sa'd al-Jumahi" (their mawla), and he (Yusuf bin Sa'd) is thiqah. But what appears most likely is that al-Qasim's shaykh in the report about the dream concerning Banu Umayyah is "Yusuf bin Mazin" himself. Some counted Yusuf bin Sa'd and Yusuf bin Mazin as one and the same person, as the practice of al-Mizzi indicates; but al-Bukhari distinguished between them in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (8/ 373 and 374), giving each of them a separate biography, and Ibn Abi Hatim followed him. Ibn Hajar said in "al-Tahdhib": The fact that al-Qasim bin al-Fadl narrates from both of them and that both are Basrans does not necessarily mean that they are one person.
Technical note (hearing and contemporaneity): There is "nazar" (doubt) about whether this Yusuf bin Mazin witnessed the episode of al-Hasan bin 'Ali and Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with them). Although al-Tabari mentioned in his Tafsir (30/ 210) that he was the very person who objected to al-Hasan bin 'Ali, this goes against all the other narrations. Ibn Abi Hatim, quoting his father, stated firmly that his (Yusuf's) narration from 'Ali bin Abi Talib is "mursal". This means that he did not witness the event of the peace settlement between al-Hasan bin 'Ali and Mu'awiyah, because that event took place around the time of 'Ali's death. That is why al-Dhahabi stated firmly in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (3/ 272) that there is an "inqita'" (break) in it. And Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/ 272): There is doubt about Yusuf bin Mazin having been present at the affair of al-Hasan and Mu'awiyah; he may have taken it "mursal" from someone who is not reliable, and Allah knows best. I asked our shaykh Abu al-Hajjaj al-Mizzi (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said: "It is a munkar hadith."
Technical note / Nakarah (objectionability): Ibn Kathir mentioned in his Tafsir (8/ 463) something that indicates the objectionability (nakarah) of linking the revelation of Surat al-Qadr to the episode of the dream in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was shown the rule of Banu Umayyah. The reason is that the mention of a thousand months in the narration conflicts with the historical fact that the rule of Banu Umayyah lasted more than a thousand months.
