Virtues of al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): a man reproaching al-Hasan over the caliphate, his reply, and the revelation of "Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar"

Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr narrates from his father that he said: I said to Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both): People are saying that you want the caliphate. He said: "The chiefs of the Arabs were in my hand; they would fight whomever I fought and make peace with whomever I made peace with. I gave it up seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty and to spare the blood of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Shall I then (now) seize it back by means of the billy-goats (i.e. the lowly men) of the people of the Hijaz?!"
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

It is narrated from Yusuf bin Mazin al-Rasibi that a man stepped up to Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: O you who have blackened the faces of the believers! Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah have mercy on you, do not reproach me, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Banu Umayyah delivering sermons on his pulpit one man after another, and that grieved him (peace and blessings be upon him). So this verse was revealed: 'Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar' [Surah al-Kawthar: 1], which is a river in Paradise; and this was revealed: 'Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months' [Surah al-Qadr: 1-3], (the thousand months) which Banu Umayyah would rule. So when we calculated it, it (the days of their rule) was neither more nor less than that."
This chain is sahih (authentic), and the one who said this to Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali was Sufyan bin al-Layl, a companion of his father.
