Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4817

Muhammad bin Umar said: Al-Zuhri narrated to us, through Urwah, from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away six months after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Muhammad bin Umar said: In our view, this is what is established and reliable.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) The printed edition adds "عن عائشة" (from 'A'ishah), whereas in the manuscripts (usul) 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is not mentioned in Ibn Jurayj's narration from al-Zuhri, and this is "correct".
Reference / Source: For al-Tabari quoted it in his "Tarikh" [3/ 240] from al-Waqidi, and he did not mention 'A'ishah in his narration from Ibn Jurayj; and likewise Ibn 'Abd al-Barr quoted it in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 928).

Important point: (3) The statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the time of Sayyidah Fatimah's death is authentically established from her, and Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi has been corroborated on it.
Details of the narration: Al-Waqidi's statement about Sayyidah Fatimah's age at the time of her death was agreed with by Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini [as stated in "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/ 159-160], and likewise by Ibn Abi Shaybah [as stated in Ibn Shahin's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah", which Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi quoted in "Jami' al-Athar" 3/ 504].
Important point: And close to it is the statement of Muhammad bin Ishaq found in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" [22/ (998)], and from him Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah" (7339), where he said: "She died at the age of 28."
Reference / Source: And Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri also said the same, as the author narrated from him in "Fada'il Fatimah" (79), and via him Ibn 'Asakir [3/ 161].
Technical note / Disagreement: 'Abd Allah bin Hasan bin Hasan bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib differed from them [in al-Tahawi's "Sharh al-Mushkil" after hadith (142)], saying: "The age at which she died was 25 years." And this statement is stronger than what al-Zubayr bin Bakkar transmitted from him with another chain [which Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated in the third volume (al-sifr al-thalith) of his "Tarikh" (1608)], that her age reached 30.
Important point: And Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" [2/ 32]: "The correct view is that her age was 24 years." And this is close to the aforementioned statement of 'Abd Allah bin Hasan.
Note / Clarification: And it will come shortly from Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Sadiq under no. (4821) that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) died at the age of 21.
Details of the narration: The statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the time of Sayyidah Fatimah's death came within the story of her coming to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask for her inheritance. It was recorded by Ahmad [1/ (25)], al-Bukhari (3039) and Muslim (1759) via Salih bin Kaysan; by al-Bukhari (4240), Muslim (1759) and Ibn Hibban (6607) via 'Uqayl bin Khalid al-Ayli; and by Ibn Hibban (4823) via Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah. All three narrate it from al-Zuhri with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Ahmad and Muslim, Salih bin Kaysan separated this statement from the hadith of 'A'ishah with the word "qala" (he said), as if indicating that it is not 'A'ishah's statement. In al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" [6/ 300], in the narration of Ahmad bin Mansur (from 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri), while mentioning the hadith of 'A'ishah he said: "Ma'mar said: I asked al-Zuhri: How long did Fatimah remain after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Six months." And with Ibn 'Asakir [3/ 161] this statement of al-Zuhri came on its own (mufrad) in two narrations; one of them is the narration of Abu Zur'ah al-Razi from Abu al-Yaman al-Hakam bin Nafi', from Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, and it is in "Tarikh Abi Zur'ah" [1/ 290].
Reference / Source: And with al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (93) it is narrated from Abu al-Yaman, from Shu'ayb, from al-Zuhri, who said: "'Urwah bin al-Zubayr informed me from 'A'ishah", then he mentioned the hadith and said: "And Fatimah lived for six months after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Important point: So Imam al-Bukhari separated the aforementioned statement (from the hadith) with the word "qala", in agreement with Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi's narration from Abu al-Yaman, and likewise in agreement with the narration of Salih bin Kaysan (found with Ahmad and Muslim), and Allah Most High knows best.
Note / Clarification: Shortly after this, this statement will come from 'A'ishah on its own (mufrad) in the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq (from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah). So it appears that it is indeed the statement of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and al-Zuhri agreed with her on it.
