Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This narration is weak because of "idtirab" (inconsistency), as explained under hadith no. (4798), and also because of the "nakarah" (objectionable nature) of its text.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For Asma' bint 'Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) was in Abyssinia with her husband Ja'far bin Abi Talib at the time of Sayyidah Fatimah's wedding procession. Al-Dhahabi pointed out this error in "al-Talkhis", and likewise Ibn Hajar said in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (1629): "Asma' bint 'Umays was at that time in the land of Abyssinia with her husband Ja'far; there is no disagreement about that. Perhaps this happened with her sister Salma bint 'Umays, who was the wife of Hamzah bin 'Abd al-Muttalib."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: this report revolves around "Abu Yazid al-Madini", and neither the name nor the lineage of this Abu Yazid is known. More than one person from the people of Basrah narrated from him; Ibn Ma'in declared him trustworthy, Ahmad bin Hanbal regarded him as acceptable, and al-Bukhari narrated one "mawquf" hadith of his; but when Imam Malik (the imam of the people of Madinah) was asked about him, he said: I do not know him!
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8455) narrated it from Isma'il bin Mas'ud, from Hatim bin Wardan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Akhi Mimi narrated it in his "Fawa'id" (429) via Abu al-Rabi' al-Zahrani, from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Abu Yazid al-Madani, who said: Asma' bint 'Umays said.
Reference / Source: Ibn Akhi Mimi narrated it in (429) via Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Kamjara, and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [42/ 133] via Yahya bin Bahr al-Kirmani; both of them narrate it from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Abu Yazid, that: "Asma' narrated, saying…"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Whereas Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Mawsili differed, and narrated it with Ibn Akhi Mimi (429) from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Abu Yazid, that: "'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said…" So he made it a hadith of 'A'ishah in place of Asma' bint 'Umays!
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in "al-Musannaf" (9781) in the transmission of Ishaq al-Dabari, and from him al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" [24/ (365)], from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from Ayyub, from 'Ikrimah and Abu Yazid al-Madini, or from one of the two - (this doubt is 'Abd al-Razzaq's) - that Asma' bint 'Umays said…
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani corroborated al-Dabari on this in his narration from 'Abd al-Razzaq, which is in al-Ajurri's "al-Shari'ah" (1618).
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" (2142) and Ahmad bin Hanbal in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (958); both narrate it from 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Ayyub, from 'Ikrimah and Abu Yazid al-Madani (both), that the two of them said…
Important point: Thus Ibn Rahawayh and Ahmad narrated it from 'Abd al-Razzaq mentioning 'Ikrimah and Abu Yazid together (maqrun), without any doubt.
Reference / Source: And Ma'mar narrated in his "al-Jami'" (20369) from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from 'Ikrimah, who said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Fatimah off, he said: "I have spared no effort in marrying you to the dearest of my family to me."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkling water on Fatimah and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) on the wedding night is the hadith of Buraydah al-Aslami, found with al-Nasa'i (10016), al-Bazzar (4471) and others.
Details of the narration: However, it states that he (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water on 'Ali alone, and it adds his (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication for the two of them: "اللهم بارك فيهما وبارك عليهما وبارك لهما في شبلهما" (O Allah, bless them both, send down blessing upon them both, and bless them both in their offspring).
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar graded its chain "hasan" in "Mukhtasar Zawa'id al-Bazzar" (1993).
