Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4804

It is narrated from Suwayd bin Ghafalah that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sought the hand of Abu Jahl's daughter from her paternal uncle al-Harith bin Hisham, and he consulted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you asking me about her lineage?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I already know her lineage, but do you command me to marry her? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No. Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) is a piece of me, and I think she would only be grieved or distressed." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not do anything that she dislikes.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this context.

Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the mention of Suwayd bin Ghafalah in it is "not mahfuz" (not preserved). It is actually one of the "mursal" narrations of al-Sha'bi ('Amir bin Sharahil), in which he did not mention Suwayd bin Ghafalah. Likewise it is (without Suwayd) in Ahmad bin Hanbal's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1323). So it appears that the mention of Suwayd bin Ghafalah in it is a "wahm" (error) on the part of the author (al-Hakim), and Allah Most High knows best.
Reference / Source: Likewise it was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq (13268) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah; by Ibn Abi Shaybah [12/ 128] from Muhammad bin Bishr; and by Yunus bin Bukayr in his additions (358) to Ibn Ishaq's "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah", and via him by al-Dulabi in "al-Dhurriyyah al-Tahirah" (56). All three narrate it from Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, from al-Sha'bi, in "mursal" form, and do not go beyond him.
Details of the narration: And see the hadith of al-Miswar bin Makhramah that has passed under no. (4787), and the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr that will come later under no. (40806).
