Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4737

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you make Abu Bakr the ruler, he is detached from the world and seeks the Hereafter, though there is some frailty in his body. If you make Umar the ruler, he is strong and trustworthy, and in the matter of Allah he does not care about the blame of any blamer. And if you make Ali the ruler, he is himself rightly guided and guides others to the way; he will keep you firm upon the Straight Path."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
[A brief account of the martyrdom of the Commander of the Faithful Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), with the most authentic chains of narration]

Grading: It is weak because of its inconsistency (idtirab), as passed at number (4483).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) himself declared this chain defective in his book "Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 29), and Abu 'Amr al-Dani followed him in "Kitab fi 'Ilm al-Hadith" (p. 43), on the grounds that Sufyan al-Thawri did not hear it from Abu Ishaq ('Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) (directly), but heard it through "Sharik al-Nakha'i" from Abu Ishaq - even though al-Hakim acknowledges that al-Thawri's hearing from Abu Ishaq and his renown for it are well known. Al-Hakim relied in this on the narration of "Abu al-Salt Abd al-Salam bin Salih from Abd Allah bin Numayr", whose takhrij is coming. But this Abu al-Salt is not strong (laysa bi-dhaka), and a chain is not declared defective on account of someone like him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Razzaq has three shaykhs for this report of Hudhayfah, each of whom narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, as will come. One of them is "al-Nu'man bin Abi Shaybah", by whose way the author narrated the report here, even though Abd al-Razzaq's direct hearing from Sufyan al-Thawri is famous and well known; but this particular report he did not hear (directly), as he himself stated explicitly in what will come.
Reference / Source: Al-Hakim recorded it in "Ma'rifat 'Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 29), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (231), "al-Hilyah" (1/ 64) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (190), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (4/ 484), Ibn al-Shajari in his "Amali" (1/ 143), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (405) and Ibn al-Jazari in "Manaqib al-Asad al-Ghalib" (34) by way of Muhammad bin Abi al-Sari; Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (5/ 313) and al-Khatib (4/ 484) by way of Muhammad bin Mas'ud al-'Ajami; and Ibn 'Adi (5/ 313) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (20/ 42 and 44/ 235) by way of Ahmad bin Yusuf al-Sulami, known as Hamdan al-Sulami. All three narrate it from Abd al-Razzaq, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli recorded it in "al-Du'afa'" (1050) and al-Hakim in "al-Ma'rifah" (pp. 28-29) by way of Muhammad bin Sahl bin 'Askar, from Abd al-Razzaq, who said: "Al-Thawri mentioned from Abu Ishaq, from Zayd bin Yuthay', from Hudhayfah", and he mentioned it. Then al-'Uqayli said in his narration: It was said to Abd al-Razzaq: "Did you hear this from al-Thawri?" He said: "No; Yahya bin al-'Ala' and others narrated it to me." Then they asked him a second time, and he said: "Al-Nu'man bin Abi Shaybah and Yahya bin al-'Ala' narrated it to us from Sufyan al-Thawri."
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi (5/ 313) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 420) recorded it by way of Abu al-Azhar Ahmad bin al-Azhar, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Yahya bin al-'Ala'; and Ibn 'Adi (5/ 313) by way of Muhammad bin Rafi', from Abd al-Razzaq, from Sa'id bin Muslim bin Qumadhin. Both (Yahya and Sa'id) narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Ishaq, from Zayd bin Yuthay', from Hudhayfah.
Grade of the narrator: Yahya bin al-'Ala' is weak, and Sa'id bin Muslim bin Qumadhin is majhul al-hal (of unknown condition).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the route of Abu al-Salt Abd al-Salam bin Salih, al-Hakim recorded it in "al-Ma'rifah" (p. 29), al-Khatib in his "Tarikh" (12/ 316) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 419, 420), by way of him, from Abd Allah bin Numayr, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Abu Ishaq, from Zayd bin Yuthay', from Hudhayfah. So he added "Sharik" to its chain between Sufyan and Abu Ishaq. But this Abu al-Salt is not that strong, and even supposing the mention of Sharik in its chain were established, Sharik has a poor memory and is "muqarib al-hadith" (middling in hadith).
