It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "It is a firm covenant that this Ummah will soon, after me, be disloyal to you. You will live upon my religion and be martyred upon my Sunnah. Whoever loves you has loved me, and whoever hates you has hated me. And indeed this (beard) will be dyed from this (the blood of the head)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is weak and mudtarib (inconsistent). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yunus bin Abi Ya'fur is disputed, and he is closer to weakness; he is, as Ibn Hibban said in "al-Majruhin" (3/ 139), "munkar al-hadith". Moreover, there is disagreement over him in the chain of this hadith of his. Muhammad bin 'Umar bin Hayyaj narrated it (with the author here) from Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman al-Arhabi, from Yunus bin Abi Ya'fur, from his father, from Hayyan al-Asadi (who is Hayyan bin Husayn), from Ali. Details of the narration: Whereas Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-'Ala' - as Ibn 'Adi recorded in "al-Kamil" (5/ 194) - narrated it from Yahya al-Arhabi, from Yunus bin Abi Ya'fur, from Ali bin Nizar, from Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad al-Asadi, from Hayyan al-Asadi, from Ali. Details of the narration: Likewise Yahya bin Abd Allah al-Raqqi (in Ibn 'Adi, 5/ 194) and Isma'il bin Aban al-Azdi (in al-Daraqutni's "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" 1/ 413) narrated it, both from Yunus bin Abi Ya'fur, from Ali bin Nizar, from Yazid bin Ziyad, from Hayyan al-Asadi, from Ali. Except that Yahya al-Raqqi - whom we do not know - named the shaykh of Ali bin Nizar "Ziyad bin Abi Ziyad al-Asadi" (instead of Yazid). Technical note: Ali bin Nizar is very weak (da'if jiddan), and we could not identify his shaykh.
