Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are "thiqah", but it is "mursal", because Ali bin al-Husayn (Zayn al-'Abidin) did not witness this story.
Important point: However, this story is narrated through multiple routes, most of which Ibn Kathir cited in "Musnad al-Faruq" (483-490), and he said after them: "These are good (jayyid) routes that yield certainty in this matter regarding what it contains, and praise be to Allah."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/ 63) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain. Al-Ajurri also recorded it in "al-Shari'ah" (1713, 1820) by way of Muhammad bin al-Ash'ath al-Sijistani (the brother of Abu Dawud), and Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1069) from Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, both of them from Mu'alla bin Asad, from Wuhayb, from Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali, from his father: "that 'Umar bin al-Khattab proposed to Ali for (the hand of) Umm Kulthum", and (he mentioned) the report.
Technical note: These two narrators contradicted "al-Sari bin Khuzaymah" in it, making it a mursal of Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir rather than a mursal of his father Ali bin al-Husayn. Muhammad bin al-Ash'ath is "majhul"; only his nephew narrated from him. And al-Kudaymi is "very weak".
Preponderant view: But what is "preserved" (mahfuz) is that it is a mursal of Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, for al-Bayhaqi likewise recorded it in "Manaqib al-Shafi'i" (1/ 64) by way of Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki, from Wuhayb, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, as mursal, without mentioning his father Ali bin al-Husayn.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is supported by the fact that others besides Wuhayb bin Khalid narrated this report from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, without mentioning Ali bin al-Husayn Zayn al-'Abidin. Thus Sa'id bin Mansur recorded it in his "Sunan" (520) from Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi; Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (10/ 430), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (19/ 486), from Anas bin 'Iyad al-Laythi; and Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 4211) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah. All three narrate it from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, and he mentioned the story without mentioning Ali bin al-Husayn; but the narration of Ibn 'Uyaynah is abridged to the part that 'Umar narrated as marfu'. Al-Daraqutni mentioned in his "al-'Ilal" (211) that Sufyan al-Thawri corroborated them on that, narrating from Ja'far bin Muhammad, and that their version is the "preserved" one. We say: Ibn al-Maghazili recorded it by way of al-Thawri in "Manaqib Ali" (152) with a "ruined" (talif) chain to him; perhaps al-Daraqutni had it through a better route.
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri likewise recorded it in "al-Shari'ah" (1714) by way of 'Uthman bin al-Mughirah al-Thaqafi, from Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, citing from it the story of 'Umar coming to the gathering of the Muhajirun to the end of the hadith. So he made it a mursal of Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir without mentioning his father Ali bin al-Husayn, and its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim).
Reference / Source: Likewise Ishaq bin Rahawayh recorded it in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 3989/ 2) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (19/ 485) by way of 'Urwah bin Abd Allah bin Qushayr al-Ju'fi, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, and he mentioned the story without mentioning his father Ali bin al-Husayn. It is likewise with Ishaq by way of Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Sadiq, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated this report in his "Sirah" (narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, 347) from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn, from his father, and by way of him al-Bayhaqi (7/ 63) recorded it - and graded it hasan as a mursal. Thereby he agreed with the narration of "al-Sari bin Khuzaymah from Wuhayb" that is with the author (i.e. including Zayn al-'Abidin in the chain).
Corroborations: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (2635) and "al-Awsat" (5606), and by way of him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (7/ 314) and Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (1/ 101, 102), by way of al-Hasan bin Sahl al-Hannat, from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir bin Abd Allah, who said: I heard 'Umar bin al-Khattab. So Muhammad bin Ali connected it by mentioning "Jabir bin Abd Allah". Al-Tabarani said: "No one transmitted this hadith with a complete chain (jawwada) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah except al-Hasan bin Sahl; others narrated it from Sufyan, from Ja'far, from his father, without mentioning Jabir bin Abd Allah."
Preponderant view: We say: he is referring to the narration of "Ibn Abi 'Umar al-'Adani" from Sufyan, whose takhrij has passed. Al-'Adani is among the most reliable of people in (narrating from) Sufyan, so his narration is the "preserved" one, and the narration of al-Hasan bin Sahl (mentioning Jabir) is "shadh" (anomalous).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (2633), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (2/ 34), from Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Nawfali, from Ibrahim bin Hamzah al-Zubayri, from Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab, and he mentioned the story with further additions not in our narration.
Narrator criticism and appraisal: This Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Nawfali: a number of people narrated from him, among them al-Tahawi and al-Tabarani, and Ibn Yunus mentioned him in "Tarikh al-Ghuraba'" (as in al-'Ayni's "Maghani al-Akhyar") without mentioning any criticism or praise of him, so he is "mastur al-hal" (of undisclosed status).
Details of the narration: Abd Allah bin Zayd bin Aslam narrated from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) only the "marfu'" part of it. Al-Bazzar (274) recorded it by way of him.
Grade of the narrator: And Abd Allah bin Zayd bin Aslam has "lin" (weakness) in him.
Details of the narration: Likewise it is narrated from 'Umar bin al-Khattab through his son Abd Allah bin 'Umar by two routes: the first is in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (2634), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/ 199-200) and al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (16/ 85 and 17/ 463); the second is with al-Bazzar (as in "Kashf al-Astar" 2455), Bahshal in "Tarikh Wasit" (p. 149), Ibn al-Maghazili (153) and others.
Grading: Both routes have weakness in them.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part of it, mentioning that the lineage and marriage-tie of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will remain connected on the Day of Resurrection, is supported by what Ahmad (31/ 18907, 18930) and others recorded from the hadith of al-Miswar bin Makhramah; its chain can possibly be graded hasan, and it will come with the author at number (4802).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also supported by what al-Ajurri recorded in "al-Shari'ah" (1710), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (11621), al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (11/ 558) and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (11/ 343), by way of Musa bin Abd al-'Aziz al-'Adani, from al-Hakam bin Aban al-'Adani, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Narrator criticism and appraisal: Musa bin Abd al-'Aziz is disputed and "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory), and this narration of his is "defective" (mu'allal) because Ayyub narrated it from 'Ikrimah as "mursal", as in Abd al-Razzaq's "Musannaf" (10354).
General principle: These hadiths about (the benefit of) lineage (on the Day of Resurrection) are contradicted by what is in the Book (of Allah) and the authentic Sunnah. From the Book, the saying of Allah the Exalted: "So when the Horn is blown, there will be no lineage among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another" [al-Mu'minun 23:101]. From the Sunnah, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "O people of Quraysh, buy (save) yourselves; I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O Banu Abd Manaf, I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O 'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O Safiyyah, aunt of the Messenger of Allah, I cannot avail you anything against Allah. And O Fatimah daughter of Muhammad, ask me for whatever you wish of my wealth; I cannot avail you anything against Allah."
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2753) and Muslim (204, 206) narrated it from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, and similar to it is the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Muslim (205); and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "And whoever is held back by his deeds will not be hastened forward by his lineage" in Muslim (2699), which passed with the author at number (302). And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Important point: As for 'Umar's proposal to Umm Kulthum and his marriage to her, Sa'id bin Mansur (521), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 962) and others recorded it by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from 'Amr bin Dinar, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali, who said: "'Umar bin al-Khattab proposed to (marry) Ali's daughter. He (Ali) mentioned that she was young. They said to him ('Umar): She has reached maturity. So he approached him again, and he (Ali) said: We will send her to you so you can look at her. He was pleased with her, and uncovered her shin, and she said: Let go! Were you not the Commander of the Believers, I would have slapped your eyes." It does not contain the marfu' part that 'Umar bin al-Khattab narrated.
Grading: Its chain up to Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali is "sahih", and Ali's excuse in this narration differs from his excuse in the narration of Ja'far bin Muhammad.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Sakan recorded it in his "Sihah" (as in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Talkhis al-Habir" 3/ 143), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6609) and al-Bayhaqi (7/ 64 and 114) by way of Ibn Jurayj: Ibn Abi Mulaykah informed me: Hasan bin Hasan informed me, from his father, that 'Umar (proposed), and he mentioned the story similar to the narration of 'Amr bin Dinar from Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir, with the excuse of Umm Kulthum's young age, and he has an addition to the story.
Technical note: This Hasan bin Hasan is "Hasan bin Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib", so this is a "connected" (mawsul) narration. But in the chain up to Ibn Jurayj with al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi is "Sufyan bin Waki' bin al-Jarrah", who is weak, though he may be used in corroborations and supporting reports.
Details of the narration: Part of this story is also narrated from the "mursal" of al-Hasan al-Basri, in Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/ 345), by way of Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd, from al-Hasan al-Basri. He mentioned 'Umar's proposal to Ali for his daughter Umm Kulthum and Ali's excuse of her young age, then mentioned something similar to what 'Amr bin Dinar added in his narration from Muhammad bin Ali al-Baqir.
Grading: Its narrators are "thiqah", were it not for its being mursal.
