Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is utterly weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding Salih bin Muqatil, al-Daraqutni said in al-Hakim's Questions to him (112): "He is not strong", and al-Bayhaqi said in his "Sunan" (1/ 305): "He narrates munkar reports." Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli is disputed, but most declare him weak, and he was a Shi'i. Ibn Hibban said in "al-Majruhin" (3/ 126): "He was one of those whose memory was poor and whose errors were many."
Identification of the narrator: Al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran. Ibrahim is Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i. 'Alqamah is Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i. Abd Allah is Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ibn Shahin recorded it in "Sharh Madhahib Ahl al-Sunnah" (103) from Muhammad bin al-Husayn bin Humayd bin al-Rabi', from Muhammad bin 'Ubayd bin 'Utbah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (10006) by way of Ahmad bin Budayl al-Yami; Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (7/ 281), Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (5/ 88), Ibn al-Maghazili in "Manaqib Ali" (249), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/ 351) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (674) by way of Abu Bishr Harun bin Hatim al-Kufi; al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tali Talkhis al-Mutashabih" (2/ 365) by way of 'Asim bin 'Amir al-Bajali; and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (43/ 351) by way of al-Hasan bin Sabir. All four (Ahmad bin Budayl, Harun bin Hatim, 'Asim bin 'Amir, al-Hasan bin Sabir) narrate it from Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli, with it.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (38) by way of 'Asim bin 'Umar al-Bajali, from al-A'mash, with it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is erroneous; a drop (of a narrator) and a corruption occurred in it. For he is "'Asim bin 'Amir", not "'Umar" as it appears here, and he narrates it through Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli from al-A'mash, as it appears with al-Khatib in "Tali al-Talkhis". So the mention of Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli dropped out of Abu Nu'aym's chain, and the report goes back to him (al-Ramli).
Reference / Source: Abu al-Hasan Ali bin 'Umar al-Harbi al-'Askari recorded it in his "Hadith" (35) (within a collection containing the works of Abu al-Hasan al-Hammami and other hadith booklets, edited by Nabil Jarrar), Abu Bakr al-Shirazi in "al-Alqab" (as in al-Suyuti's "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 1/ 314), and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 352), by way of Ahmad bin al-Hajjaj bin al-Salt, from Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin al-Mubarak Ashtawayh, from Mansur bin Abi al-Aswad, from al-A'mash, with it.
Narrator criticism and appraisal: This Muhammad bin al-Mubarak is "majhul" and not known. Al-Dhahabi wrote the biography of the one narrating from him (Ahmad) in "al-Mizan", mentioned another munkar report of his, and said: "Ahmad is its bane." It seems al-Khatib kept silent about him and did not declare him weak because his condition was (already) exposed. Mansur bin Abi al-Aswad is acceptable (laysa bihi ba's), but he was one of the leading Shi'ah.
Important point: So this report has no chain that is established up to Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, and al-Dhahabi ruled that it is fabricated (mawdu').
Note / Clarification: Abu Nu'aym mentioned in "Fada'il al-Khulafa'" after (38) that 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa also narrated it from al-A'mash, but we did not find this narration in the sources available to us.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 352) recorded it by way of Isma'il bin al-Qasim al-Halabi, from Abu Ahmad al-'Abbas bin al-Fadl bin Ja'far al-Makki, from Muhammad bin Harun bin Hassan known as Ibn al-Barqi, from Hammad bin al-Mubarak, from Abu Nu'aym, from al-Thawri, from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: This is an "obscure chain" (muzlim); we did not find a biography of al-'Abbas bin al-Fadl al-Makki, and we could not determine who Hammad bin al-Mubarak is.
Note: See what comes after it.
