Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name is written "Ali bin Abd al-'Aziz bin Mu'awiyah", i.e. the name "Ali" has been inserted, whereas the correct name is "Abd al-'Aziz bin Mu'awiyah bin Abd Allah Abu Khalid al-Basri". It appears correctly in Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (15028), and likewise al-Suyuti, quoting it from al-Hakim in "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" (1/ 316), gave the name correctly. The author (al-Hakim) has several other hadiths through the narration of Da'laj bin Ahmad al-Sijzi from Abd al-'Aziz bin Mu'awiyah al-Basri.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding the narrator Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Ju'fi, we think most probably that he is "al-Sini", because in another hadith in al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-Khallal's "al-Majalis al-'Asharah al-Amali" (7) he is specified with the nisbah "al-Sini", narrating from this same shaykh of his who is here, "Abd Allah bin Abd Rabbih al-'Ijli". If so, al-Daraqutni called him "matruk", and al-Khalili called him "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory) in "al-Irshad" (1/ 235). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" but said: "He sometimes contradicts (others)." Nevertheless, al-Dhahabi was lenient in "Tarikh al-Islam" (5/ 515) and said: "He was saduq (truthful) and blind." And his shaykh here, Abd Allah bin Abd Rabbih al-'Ijli, is a "majhul" narrator who is not known.
Final verdict: Al-Dhahabi ruled this hadith fabricated (mawdu') in his "Talkhis" and in "Mawdu'at al-Mustadrak" (18), and before him Ibn al-Jawzi did so in "al-Mawdu'at".
Reference / Source: Ibn Mardawayh recorded it (as in Ibn al-Jawzi's "al-Mawdu'at" 682 M), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5307), Ibn al-Maghazili in "Manaqib Ali" (247, 254), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/ 354) and Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i in "al-Tadwin fi Akhbar Qazwin" (3/ 391) by way of Muhammad bin Yunus bin Musa al-Kudaymi, from Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Ju'fi, with this chain.
Technical note: This Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi is "very weak", and some scholars accused him of lying.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Khalaf recorded it in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (2/ 123), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/ 207), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5306), Ibn al-Maghazili (246), Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 353), al-Rafi'i (2/ 127) and Ibn al-Abbar al-Quda'i in his "Mu'jam" (p. 316) by way of 'Imran bin Khalid bin Tulayq bin Muhammad bin 'Imran bin Husayn, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Imran bin al-Husayn.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This 'Imran bin Khalid bin Tulayq is "matruk" and "munkar al-hadith". Ibn Hibban said: "It is not permissible to use him as proof." His father Khalid was mentioned by al-Daraqutni in "al-Du'afa' wa al-Matrukin" (202). Al-Dhahabi mentioned this hadith in the biography of 'Imran bin Tulayq in "al-Mizan" and said: "This is false (batil)."
Technical note: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi said (as Ibn 'Asakir quoted from him, 42/ 354): "This hadith is gharib as a narration of Tulayq bin 'Imran from his father, and gharib as a narration of Khalid bin Tulayq from his father; his son 'Imran bin Khalid is alone in narrating it from him, and we have written it only through this route." Ibn 'Asakir said: "Someone other than his son also narrated it from Khalid." I (the editor) say: Apparently he means what Ibn Hajar recorded in "Lisan al-Mizan", in the biography of al-'Abbas bin Bakkar al-Dabbi (4/ 404), by way of Muhammad bin Mazyad bin Abi al-Azhar, from al-'Abbas bin Bakkar, from Khalid bin Tulayq, from his father, from his grandfather.
Criticism of a narrator: This al-'Abbas bin Bakkar is "munkar al-hadith"; al-Daraqutni called him a liar, and Abu Ahmad al-Hakim said: "He is dhahib al-hadith (his hadith is lost, worthless)."
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Abhari recorded it in his "Fawa'id" (58), and by way of him Ibn al-Tuyuri in "al-Tuyuriyyat" (540), by way of al-Hasan bin al-Qasim, from Bakkar bin al-'Abbas, from Khalid bin al-Tufayl, from the son of 'Imran bin Husayn, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This al-Hasan bin al-Qasim is "Ibn al-Husayn al-Bajali al-Tammar"; no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone. The name of his shaykh "Bakkar bin al-'Abbas" is inverted (maqlub); the correct name is "al-'Abbas bin Bakkar", as in Ibn Hajar's chain mentioned above, and al-Daraqutni called him a liar. And his shaykh "Khalid bin al-Tufayl" is apparently a corruption of "Khalid bin Tulayq".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The like of this hadith has been narrated from a group of the Companions, whose routes were cited by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/ 350-355), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (2/ 12-130) and al-Suyuti in "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" (11/ 313-317). All of them are weak and not authentic; indeed some are utterly ruined (talif). Ibn al-Jawzi and al-Suyuti discussed them exhaustively, as did al-Albani in "al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah" (4702).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This report has a route that is apparently its best, recorded by Abu Sa'd al-Samman in "al-Muwafaqah", as al-Dhahabi pointed out in "Tarikh al-Islam" (7/ 872) and "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (15/ 542). It is from the narration of Abu al-Fawaris Ahmad bin Muhammad bin al-Husayn bin al-Sindi al-Sabuni, from Muhammad bin Hammad al-Tihrani, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah, from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them), and he mentioned the report. Al-Dhahabi said: "This was inserted into (the narrations of) Abu al-Fawaris", and he said: "He is truthful (saduq) in himself, but not a proof; this false hadith was inserted into his narrations and he narrated it."
Note / Clarification: Al-Khattabi mentioned this report in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 181-182) and attributed it to some of the Salaf, without attributing it to the Prophet. Then he interpreted it, saying: "Its meaning - and Allah knows best - is that looking at his (Ali's) face calls to the remembrance of Allah, because of the light of Islam discerned in him and the radiance of faith seen upon him, and because the traces of prostration and the marks of humility are evident in him. It is with this that Allah described those with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) among his Companions, saying: 'Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration' [al-Fath 48:29]."
