Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because of Muhammad bin Humayd (al-Razi), who is "matruk al-hadith", and there is disagreement over (how it was narrated from) him, as will come. Salamah bin al-Fadl (al-Abrash) is not that strong (laysa bi-dhaka) outside the (reports of the) military expeditions (maghazi). And 'Attab bin Tha'labah is "majhul".
General principle: This report is narrated from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari through other routes, none of which carries any weight at all. That is why al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": "It is not authentic; al-Hakim cited it with two different weak chains to Abu Ayyub." And he cited it in "al-Mizan" in the biography of 'Attab bin Tha'labah through this route, saying: "The chain is obscure and the text is munkar." We say: the like of this report is narrated from a group of the Companions, but nothing about it is established, as al-'Uqayli said in "al-Du'afa'" (3/ 383).
Reference / Source: The author (al-Hakim) recorded it in "al-Arba'in" (as in al-Suyuti's "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 1/ 374-375), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (42/ 472), from Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Balawayh, from al-Hasan bin Ali bin Shabib al-Ma'mari, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over this (hadith) from Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi. Al-Tabarani recorded it (as in "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 1/ 376) from Ali bin Sa'id al-Razi, from Muhammad bin Humayd, from Salamah bin al-Fadl, from Abu Hamzah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sa'id 'Aqisa al-Tamimi, from 'Ammar bin Yasir, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me to fight the Nakithin (oath-breakers), the Qasitin (unjust) and the Mariqin (renegades)."
Grading: Abu Sa'id 'Aqisa is "matruk al-hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement over it from Abu Sa'id 'Aqisa. Abd al-Ghani bin Sa'id al-Misri recorded it in "Idah al-Ishkal" (as in "al-La'ali'" 1/ 376) by way of Abu Maryam Abd al-Ghaffar bin al-Qasim al-Ansari, from 'Adi bin Thabit, from Abu Sa'id, from Ali.
Grading: This Abu Maryam is a Rafidi accused of fabricating hadith.
Reference / Source: This report is also narrated through another route from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (4049), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (12/ 187) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 471) by way of Muhammad bin Kathir al-Qurashi al-Kufi, from al-Harith bin Hasirah, from Abu Sadiq, from Mikhnaf bin Sulaym, from Abu Ayyub, who said: "He commanded me to fight", and he did not mention Ali.
Grading: Muhammad bin Kathir al-Qurashi is "da'if al-hadith".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement over it from Abu Sadiq. Ibn 'Asakir (16/ 53-54) recorded it by way of Ibrahim bin Muslim al-Hajari, from Abu Sadiq, from Abu Ayyub. Ibrahim al-Hajari is "layyin al-hadith" (weak); he made it "Abu Sadiq from Abu Ayyub", dropping the mention of Mikhnaf bin Sulaym. Al-Dhahabi cited it through this route in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (2/ 410) and said: "This is a very weak (wahin) report."
Reference / Source: The report is also narrated through a third route from Abu Ayyub. Al-Khatib recorded it in "Tarikh Baghdad" (15/ 244), and by way of him al-Jurqani in "al-Abatil" (174), Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 472) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (801), by way of al-Mu'alla bin Abd al-Rahman al-Wasiti, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Sulayman al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from 'Alqamah and al-Aswad, from Abu Ayyub.
Grading: This al-Mu'alla bin Abd al-Rahman is accused of fabricating hadith, and he himself admitted that he fabricated seventy (70) hadiths on the virtues of Ali bin Abi Talib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement over it from Sharik al-Nakha'i. Al-Khatib recorded it in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/ 386-387) by way of Ibrahim bin Hurasah, from Sharik, from al-A'mash, from Abu Sa'id 'Aqisa al-Taymi, from Ali.
Grading: This Ibrahim bin Hurasah is "matruk", and some accused him (of lying).
Reference / Source: Al-Fakihi recorded it in "Akhbar Makkah" (1039) and Ibn 'Asakir (42/ 470) by way of Zakariyya bin Yahya bin Abd Allah al-Khazzaz al-Muqri', from Isma'il bin 'Abbad al-Sa'di al-Muqri' al-Basri, from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Mansur, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from 'Alqamah, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Details of the narration: He mentioned Mansur (Ibn al-Mu'tamir) in place of al-A'mash, and made it part of the Musnad of Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: This Isma'il bin 'Abbad is "matruk al-hadith".
Important point: It will come with the author after this through a fourth route from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, but it is "wahin" (very weak).
General principle: The like of this report is also narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib himself through numerous routes. A group of scholars cited them and discussed them, explaining that none of them is authentic, among them Ibn Kathir in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (10/ 632-638) and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti in "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" (1/ 374-376). Al-'Uqayli summed up its routes from Ali in "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" (2/ 32), saying: "The chains of this hadith from Ali are weak in their routes."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The like of it is also narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, by way of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from 'Alqamah bin Qays al-Nakha'i, from Ibn Mas'ud. A group narrated it thus from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, among them Muslim al-Mula'i al-A'war (al-Tabarani, "al-Kabir" 10054 and "al-Awsat" 9434, and others).
Grading: But this Muslim al-A'war is "matruk".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Yazid bin Qays also narrated it from Ibrahim (al-Shashi in his "Musnad" 322, al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 10053, and al-Khatib in "Tali Talkhis al-Mutashabih" 2/ 392). In it there is the command to fight these (groups) in general, without mentioning Ali.
Grading: But this Yazid bin Qays is "majhul".
