The Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: "By the One by whom I swear! Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest of people to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (at the time of his passing). We came in the morning to visit the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his illness, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asking again and again: 'Has Ali come? Has Ali come?' Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 'It is as though you have sent him on some errand?' The narrator (Umm Salamah) says: After that he came. Sayyidah Umm Salamah says: I sensed that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had something important to say to him, so we went out of the house and sat by the door, and I was the closest of them to the door. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned over him and began to whisper and speak privately with him. Then the soul of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken that very day. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the closest of people to him (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of his passing."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is corrupted into "Abi". The correction is from "Musnad Ahmad" itself (44/ 26565), Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1171), and all the other sources in which the report is recorded.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan", if Allah wills. Investigation of a narrator: This is because of "Umm Musa", the concubine (surriyyah) of Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). In "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad Ali section, p. 168) it is stated that she was the umm walad of al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the mother of the wife of al-Mughirah bin Miqsam. Al-'Ijli declared her trustworthy, and al-Daraqutni said: "Her hadith is sound (mustaqim); her hadith is recorded for corroboration (i'tibar)." She narrated from Ali, Umm Salamah, 'A'ishah and al-Hasan bin Ali. Al-Tabari declared her hadith sahih in "Tahdhib al-Athar", and al-Haythami declared her trustworthy. 44/ (26565). Reference / Source: It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (44/ 26565). Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (7071, 8487) recorded it from Muhammad bin Qudamah, and (8486) from Ali bin Hujr, both from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, with this chain. Details of the narration: The wording of Ali bin Hujr is abridged: "The last of the people to be with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)." Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 759): "The hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is more firmly established than this (namely, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away while she was supporting him against her chest). Perhaps she (Umm Salamah) meant the last of the men to be with him."
