Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4721

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ali! Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, you will be forgiven, even though you have already been forgiven: 'La ilaha illallahul-Aliyyul-Azim, la ilaha illallahul-Halimul-Karim, subhanallahi Rabbil-Arshil-Azim, wal-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-alamin' (There is no god but Allah, the Most High, the Most Great; there is no god but Allah, the Most Forbearing, the Most Generous; glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; and all praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih", but the words in the report: "on the condition that you are forgiven" are "not preserved" (ghayr mahfuz) in the narration of Abu Ishaq ('Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isra'il (Ibn Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i) is "alone" in adding this phrase, and Sufyan al-Thawri, who is more trustworthy and a better memorizer, contradicted him, narrating it from Abu Ishaq without it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This phrase is in fact "preserved" only in the narration of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Muradi, from Ali bin Abi Talib. Knowing that, the hadith of Abd Allah bin Salimah is accepted only when he is corroborated or something supporting it is narrated, but he was not corroborated on this phrase.
Note / Clarification: It seems that Isra'il heard this hadith from his grandfather (Abu Ishaq) with both his chains to Ali, and thought that this phrase was in his grandfather's narration "from Ibn Abi Layla", whereas it is actually in his grandfather's narration "from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abd Allah bin Salimah". And Allah knows best.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two further chains of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i besides these two have come for this hadith, and al-Daraqutni stated firmly in "al-'Ilal" (407) that they are "errors". Al-Tirmidhi (3504) recorded one of these two chains and considered it "gharib". Al-Daraqutni preferred the chain of Abu Ishaq from 'Amr bin Murrah, and said: "The statement of Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Ali, is not to be rejected."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/ 1363) recorded it from Abu Sa'id, the client of Banu Hashim; al-Nasa'i (7630, 8360, 10398) by way of Khalaf bin Tamim; and al-Nasa'i (8359) by way of Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il al-Nahdi. All three narrate it from Isra'il, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan al-Thawri corroborated Isra'il bin Yunus al-Sabi'i on this chain (see al-Daraqutni, "al-'Ilal" 407), but without the words "on the condition that you are forgiven".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8358, 10397) recorded it by way of Ahmad bin Khalid al-Wahbi, from Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from Ali, in similar form, without the phrase mentioned.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But he added to its chain a man between Abu Ishaq and Ibn Abi Layla, namely "'Amr bin Murrah". We think this addition is an "error", arising because one chain entered into another for some of its narrators.
Reference / Source: For Ahmad (2/ 712), al-Nasa'i (7631, 8356, 8357, 10399) and Ibn Hibban (6928) recorded it by way of Ali bin Salih bin Hayy al-Hamdani, and al-Nasa'i (10400) by way of Yusuf bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, both of them from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from 'Amr bin Murrah, from Abd Allah bin Salimah al-Muradi, from Ali. In it he mentioned the words: "on the condition that you are forgiven". So this is the chain that contains the mention of 'Amr bin Murrah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ali bin Salih and Yusuf al-Sabi'i were corroborated on it by Nusayr bin Abi al-Ash'ath (Ibn Abi 'Asim, "al-Sunnah" 1317) and Abd Allah bin Ali Abu Ayyub al-Ifriqi (al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, "Tarikh Baghdad" 10/ 488), and both of them also mentioned in it the words "on the condition that you are forgiven".
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3504) and al-Nasa'i (10401) recorded it by way of al-Husayn bin Waqid, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from al-Harith al-A'war, from Ali. Al-Tirmidhi said: "A gharib hadith; we know it only through this route, as a hadith of Abu Ishaq from al-Harith from Ali."
Grading: We say: al-Harith is "weak" and worthless (laysa bi-shay').
