Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "munkar", and its chain is "weak" because al-Walid bin Yasar al-Hamdani is "unknown" (majhul).
Investigation of a narrator: In some narrations it is stated that Ali bin Abi Talhah was "a client of Banu Umayyah", which indicates that he is someone other than Ali bin Abi Talhah "Salim", who is known as a client of Banu al-'Abbas. This supports Ahmad bin Hanbal's distinction between (1) the one from whom Mu'awiyah bin Salih, Abu Fadalah and Dawud bin Abi Hind narrated, who is "Syrian", and (2) the one from whom the Kufans (al-Thawri and al-Hasan bin Salih) narrated, who is "Kufan". It appears that the Syrian is the client of Banu Umayyah and the Kufan is the client of Banu al-'Abbas. And Allah knows best. If that is established, then the "Syrian" is the one who narrates the tafsir from Ibn 'Abbas, although he neither heard from Ibn 'Abbas nor saw him. So all the more would he not have seen al-Hasan bin Ali bin Abi Talib, since al-Hasan died more than fifteen years before Ibn 'Abbas. Therefore what appears in this narration - that "Ibn Abi Talhah performed Hajj and passed by al-Hasan bin Ali" - cannot be accepted; rather it is an "error", most probably from al-Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Ashqar (about whom there is criticism). This is supported by the fact that Isma'il bin Musa, the son of al-Suddi's daughter, also narrated this hadith from Sa'id bin Khuthaym, from al-Walid bin Yasar, from Ali bin Abi Talhah, who said: "Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan performed Hajj, and Mu'awiyah bin Hudayj performed Hajj with him", and he mentioned the story, in which it is not stated that Ali bin Abi Talhah was with them. This shows that the narration is "munqati'" (disconnected).
Important point: A similar story is narrated through another route from al-Hasan bin Ali, but it revolves around a "weak and an unknown" narrator.
Contradiction and reconciliation: The marfu' part here also contradicts the sahih hadith recorded by Muslim (248) and others from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Basin (Hawd) is wider than the distance from Aylah to Aden. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will drive men away from it as a man drives stray camels away from his watering-trough." Here the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that he himself is the one who will drive (people) away from it, and he did not mention Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (59/ 27) recorded it by way of Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, from al-Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Ashqar, with this chain. And Abu Ya'la (6771), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (2758) and Ibn 'Asakir (59/ 26-27) recorded it by way of Isma'il bin Musa, the son of al-Suddi's daughter, from Sa'id bin Khuthaym, with it.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (6/ 385), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (59/ 28), by way of Qays bin al-Rabi'; and al-Tabarani (2727), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (59/ 28), by way of Ali bin 'Abis. Both (Qays and Ali) narrate it from Badr bin al-Khalil, from a client of al-Hasan bin Ali. (Ibn 'Abis gave this client the kunyah "Abu Kathir".)
Grading: Qays bin al-Rabi' and Ali bin 'Abis are both "weak". Regarding Abu Kathir, the client of al-Hasan bin Ali, Abu Ahmad al-Hakim considered it possible (as al-Hafiz quoted from him in "Ta'jil al-Manfa'ah" 1381) that he is Abu Kathir, the client of the Ansar, who narrated from Ali bin Abi Talib and took part with him in the battle of al-Nahrawan, and from whom Isma'il bin Muslim al-'Abdi narrates. In any case, he is of unknown status (jahalah).
Grading: Al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": "Rather, it is munkar and wahin (very weak); it contains more than one weak narrator."
