Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4714

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the first to accept Islam with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. The reality of the disagreement on this matter is that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first among adult men to accept Islam, while Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam before reaching adulthood.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Hamzah (Talhah bin Yazid al-Ansari). Discussion of him passed under hadith number (259).
Reference / Source: It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (32/ 19306).
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3735) and al-Nasa'i (8334) recorded it through two routes from Muhammad bin Ja'far, with this chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: "A hasan sahih hadith."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (19281) recorded it from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, and al-Nasa'i (8335) by way of Abd Allah bin Idris, both of them from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj, with it.
Details of the narration: Ahmad (19284) recorded it from Yazid bin Harun; (Ahmad 19303) and al-Nasa'i (8081, 8336) by way of Khalid bin al-Harith; and (al-Nasa'i 8333) by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi. All three narrate it from Shu'bah, with it, with the wording: "The first to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." However, al-Nasa'i said in the narration of Khalid bin al-Harith: "And he said in another place: the first to accept Islam."
Note / Clarification: A similar disagreement also occurred in hadiths other than that of Zayd bin Arqam, as explained at number (4633).

General principle: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 524): "What is correct regarding Abu Bakr is that he was the first to make his Islam public." And he quoted Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi as saying: "Ali was the earlier of the two in accepting Islam. People were confused about it only because Ali concealed his Islam from Abu Talib, whereas Abu Bakr accepted Islam and made it public. There is no doubt that, in our view, Ali was the earlier of the two in accepting Islam!"
