It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that people complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us to deliver an address, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "O people! Do not complain about Ali, for by Allah, he is very stern and principled in matters concerning the Essence of Allah and His path."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets dropped out of the manuscripts, though it is indispensable; we have supplied it from "Musnad Ahmad". Al-Bayhaqi also narrated it in similar form in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 398) by way of Sa'd bin Ishaq bin Ka'b bin 'Ujrah, from his paternal aunt Zaynab bint Ka'b bin 'Ujrah, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, within a lengthy story about Ali being sent to Yemen with a group of the Companions.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Ibn Ishaq (Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar). Investigation of a narrator: From Zaynab bint Ka'b (the daughter of Ka'b bin 'Ujrah) narrated her two nephews Sulayman bin Muhammad and Sa'd bin Ishaq, both of whom are "thiqah". Ibn Hibban mentioned her in "al-Thiqat" and declared her hadith sahih. Malik and al-Shafi'i relied on her as proof, and likewise al-Tirmidhi, al-Dhuhli, Ibn al-Qattan, al-Dhahabi and others declared her hadith sahih. 18/ (11817). Reference / Source: It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (18/ 11817). Linguistic note: The saying "la-ukhayshinun fi dhat Allah" means: he has harshness (khushunah) in the cause of Allah and does not show regard for anyone in it. And this is no cause for complaining about him.
