It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Companions: "Which of you will accept my guardianship and loyalty in this world and the Hereafter?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked each one of them individually: "Do you accept to be my wali in this world and the Hereafter?" and each declined, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed by most of them. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am your wali in this world and the Hereafter," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are my wali in this world and the Hereafter."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: There is criticism (maqal) of its chain, as passed under hadith number (4702), where it came within a lengthy report on the virtues of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by way of Yahya bin Hammad from Abu 'Awanah.
