Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4675

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the leader of the children of Adam, and Ali is the leader of the Arabs."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. In its chain is the narrator Umar bin al-Hasan, about whom I hope that he is saduq (truthful); were it not for him, I would have declared it sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs. Furthermore, the narration of Urwah from Sayyidah Aishah is a supporting witness (shahid) for it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "da'if" because it is broken (munqati').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Ahmad bin Hanbal and Abu Hatim al-Razi, Sa'id bin Jubayr did not hear anything from A'ishah.
Narrator research: About Umar bin al-Hasan al-Rasibi, al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan": "He is hardly known, and he brought a false report", and then mentioned this very hadith. Al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "I think it is he who fabricated this hadith." But this statement of al-Dhahabi cannot be accepted, because al-Rasibi has been corroborated (mutaba'ah), as will come. Moreover, al-Dhahabi himself softened his judgement on it in "Tarikh al-Islam" (volume 2, page 350): after citing it through the route of Yahya al-Himmani from Abu Awanah, he said: "Something like it is narrated from A'ishah through two routes, and it is gharib"; there he limited himself to judging it gharib.
Summary: We say that (despite the charge of fabrication) the main defect remaining in this hadith is the break (inqita') or irsal.
Identification of narrators: Muhammad bin Mu'adh is Ibn Yusuf Abu Bakr al-Sulami al-Marwazi. Abu Awanah is Waddah al-Yashkuri. And Abu Bishr is Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Jazari narrated it in "Manaqib al-Asad al-Ghalib" (17) through the route of Abu Bakr bin Khalaf, from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (volume 42, page 305) through the route of Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, from Umar bin al-Hasan al-Rasibi, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Umar bin al-Hasan al-Rasibi was corroborated in this narration by Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik al-Harrani (as in al-Khallal's "al-Ilal", in Ibn Qudamah's "al-Muntakhab" (118)), and by Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani (as in Ibn Asakir 42/304). Both of them narrated it from Abu Awanah with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Himmani is "da'if" and was accused of stealing hadiths, but there is no harm in al-Harrani (la ba'sa bihi).
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-Ilal" (3671) that Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-Ala' narrated this report from Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, as a "mursal" report.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Ja'far is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable).
Reference / Source: Al-Khallal in "al-Ilal" (Muntakhab of Ibn Qudamah: 118) reported from al-Athram that he asked Imam Ahmad about this hadith and he rejected it "strongly". Al-Athram said: I said to Abu Abdullah (Imam Ahmad): Ibn al-Himmani narrated it and the people rejected it from him, yet someone else has narrated it too. Imam Ahmad asked: Who? I said: That Harrani, Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik. He said in astonishment: "Is that so!" Then he asked: Did you hear it from him yourself? I said: I heard him speaking about it; I told him that Ibn al-Himmani had narrated this, and he (Ahmad bin Abd al-Malik) said: Why do you object to me when al-Himmani has narrated it?! (Al-Athram said:) But he did not actually narrate this hadith to us.
Details of the narration: Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (7) - and through his route Ibn Asakir (42/305) - via Ibrahim bin Ziyad al-Khayyat, and al-Qati'i in his additions to Ahmad's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (599) via Muhammad bin Sulayman al-Mukharrimi, from Abd al-Malik bin Abd Rabbih al-Ta'i; both of them (Ibrahim and Abd al-Malik) brought it from Khalaf bin Khalifah, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, who said: "It has reached me that A'ishah looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O master of the Arabs! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am the master of the children of Adam, and (I say this) without pride; your father is the master of the middle-aged men of the Arabs, and Ali is the master of the young men of the Arabs."
Grading: This narration is broken (munqati').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Musa al-Hasib al-Baghdadi differed, in Abu Bakr bin al-Muqri's "Fawa'id" (thirteenth part, number 89) - and through his route Ibn Asakir (30/182). He narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Abd Rabbih, from Khalaf bin Khalifah, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from "Qays bin Abi Hazim" (i.e. he added Qays).
Narrator research: This Abd al-Malik is "munkar al-hadith", as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan". What is preserved is without mention of Qays. Thus Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated this report in his "Musannaf" (volume 12, page 14) from Khalaf bin Khalifah and did not mention Qays in it, nor did he mention Ali bin Abi Talib in it. Khalaf bin Khalifah, although "saduq", suffered from "ikhtilat" (memory confusion), and he sometimes errs in some of his narrations, as Ibn Adi said in "al-Kamil".
Note / Clarification: Mulla Ali al-Qari in "al-Asrar al-Marfu'ah" (235), using the hadith of A'ishah - assuming it is established - whose wording is: "I am the master of the children of Adam, your father is the master of the middle-aged men of the Arabs, and Ali is the master of the young men of the Arabs", removed the impression of it being munkar, and said: "With this the difficulty is removed, since by 'the Arabs' here their whole kind in all circumstances is not meant." Likewise al-Ajluni said in "Kashf al-Khafa'" (1513): "From this it is known that his (Ali's) mastership is in relation to the young men, not absolute."
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (volume 12, page 377) and al-Nasafi in "al-Qand fi Dhikr Akhbar Samarqand" (1073) narrated through the route of Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi, from Ya'qub bin Abdullah al-Ash'ari al-Qummi, from Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah, from Salamah bin Kuhayl, who said: Ali bin Abi Talib passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while A'ishah was with him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "If it pleases you to look at the master of the Arabs, then look at Ali bin Abi Talib." A'ishah said: O Prophet of Allah, are you not the master of the Arabs?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the imam of the Muslims and the master of the God-fearing."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi is "da'if" and "munkar al-hadith", a narrator of oddities, and he was contradicted in both his chain and text.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (42/305) narrated it with a "sahih chain" up to Ja'far bin Ahmad al-Awsaji, from Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari, from Ya'qub al-Qummi, from Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah, from Ibn Abza, from A'ishah, who said: One day Ali bin Abi Talib came, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the master of the Muslims." I said: O Messenger of Allah, are you not the master of the Muslims?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the seal of the prophets and the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
Narrator research: Ja'far bin Ahmad al-Awsaji (who is Ibn Awsajah) is "saduq". Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari was declared "layyin" (soft) by al-Daraqutni, but he is in a far better condition than Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this too there is a contradiction through the chain that al-Daraqutni pointed to in "al-Ilal" (3671). This is the narration of Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-Ala' (who is a thiqah hafiz) from Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, as a "mursal" report, matching the author's wording. So the hadith (its pivot) returns to Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Reference / Source: Al-Harith bin Abi Usamah narrated it in his "Musnad" (Bughyat al-Bahith: 933) through the route of Abd al-Aziz bin Aban, from Amir bin Yasaf; and Ibn Asakir (64/192) through the route of Amr bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan. Both of them (Amir and Amr) brought it from Ayyub bin Utbah, from Taysalah bin Ali, from A'ishah. Al-Harith did not mention Taysalah in his narration.
Grading: Its chain is ruinous (talif). Abd al-Aziz bin Aban is "matruk". Amr bin Muhammad bin al-Hasan is "munkar al-hadith", and some accused him of fabricating hadith. And Ayyub bin Utbah is "da'if". So this route carries no weight at all.
Important point: There is also a fifth route of it from A'ishah, which will come with the author (al-Hakim) after this one, but it too is extremely weak (wahiyah).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (2749) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (volume 1, page 63) narrated through the route of Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Sini, from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Layth bin Abi Sulaym, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He mentioned it like the narration that comes after it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Ishaq is "matruk" and Layth had a poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz). But Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Ashqar also narrated it, in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (volume 5, page 138), from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Zubayd, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla. Here he mentioned "Zubayd" in place of Layth bin Abi Sulaym, and Zubayd is "thiqah". But Husayn al-Ashqar is not strong (laysa bi-dhaka), and the narrator from him is unknown and not recognised. Qays bin al-Rabi' is not strong either. So neither of the two routes from Qays is anything to rejoice over (i.e. both are unreliable).
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Jawzi narrated something similar in "al-Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (342) from the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), but with an "extremely weak chain".
Important point: Something similar will come with the author at number (4677) from the hadith of Jabir bin Abdullah, but its chain too is extremely weak.
Important point: See the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that is coming with the author at number (4690).
