Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4674

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Whoever separates himself from me has separated himself from Allah, and whoever separates himself from you, O Ali, has in reality separated himself from me."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for this weakness is the 'an'anah of Muhammad bin Ishaq (Ibn Yasar al-Muttalibi), i.e. his narrating with "from". Moreover, the mention of Abu al-Tufayl (Amir bin Wathilah) in this report is not preserved, since none of those who narrated this report from Hammad bin Salamah mentioned Abu al-Tufayl. Furthermore, Salamah bin Abi al-Tufayl is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
Important point: However, the second part of the hadith, about "looking (again)", is "hasan li-ghayrihi" on the basis of supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-A'la bin Abd al-A'la contradicted Hammad bin Salamah in this chain. He narrated it from Ibn Ishaq, from someone who heard Abu al-Tufayl (Amir bin Wathilah), from Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have a treasure in Paradise."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (volume 4, page 77): "And it is not authentic."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (volume 2, hadith number 1373) from Affan bin Muslim with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: In this narration there is no mention of Abu al-Tufayl.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (hadith number 1369) from Yahya bin Ishaq, and Ibn Hibban (hadith number 5570) through the route of Hudbah bin Khalid.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of them (Yahya and Hudbah) brought it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain, and in it too there is no mention of Abu al-Tufayl. Also, Yahya bin Ishaq limited his narration to the second part only (the subject of looking).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For this second part of the hadith, the hadith of Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that has already passed with the author (Imam al-Hakim) at number (2824) serves as a supporting report.
Grading: That chain is "hasan" for the purpose of corroborating chains and supporting reports.

Grading: (1) This hadith is "munkar", as Imam al-Dhahabi said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our view its defect is that Mu'awiyah bin Tha'labah is alone in narrating it, and the inconsistency (idtirab) in its wording. Mu'awiyah bin Tha'labah is known only through this hadith, and his hearing from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) is not clear.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari mentioned him in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (volume 7, page 333) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (volume 8, page 378), but they mentioned no criticism or praise of him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", but his leniency in that book is well known.
Further research: The narrator from Mu'awiyah is Abu al-Jahhaf. Although several hadith scholars approved of him and considered him strong, Ibn Adi criticised him in "al-Kamil" (volume 3, page 82), saying: "He is one of the extreme Shi'ah, and most of his narrations are about the Ahl al-Bayt .... In my view he is not strong, nor is he one whose hadith is used as proof." And Ibn Adi cited this very hadith among his munkar narrations.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (962), Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh" (volume 7, page 333), al-Bazzar (4066), Ibn Adi (volume 3, page 82), Ibn al-Maghazili in "Manaqib Ali" (288 and 324) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (volume 42, page 307), through various routes from Abdullah bin Numayr with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Although Imam Ahmad recorded it as a narration in the book "al-Fada'il", investigation shows that he disliked narrating it.
Reference / Source: Al-Khallal mentioned in his "al-Ilal" - as in Ibn Qudamah's "al-Muntakhab" (115) - that al-Athram asked Imam Ahmad about this narration of Amir bin al-Simt, and Imam Ahmad said: "Strike it out (cross it out)", and he disliked narrating it.
Important point: This narration of Amir bin al-Simt will come again with the author (al-Hakim) at number (4754).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amir bin al-Sibt (who is also called Amir bin al-Simt, and is better known with "mim") is "thiqah", but he was contradicted in its wording.
Reference / Source: Thus Ali bin Hashim bin al-Barid narrated it, in Abu Bakr al-Khallal's "al-Sunnah" (452), Ibn Adi (3/82) and Ibn Asakir (42/265), from Abu al-Jahhaf, from Mu'awiyah bin Tha'labah, that a man came to Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Prophet's Mosque and said: O Abu Dharr, will you not tell me who is the most beloved of people to you? For I know that the one most beloved to you is the one most beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, the one most beloved to me is the one most beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he is that elder, and he pointed with his hand towards Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was praying in front of him.
Details of the narration: Al-Hasan bin Amr al-Fuqaymi narrated it with other wording, which has already passed at number (4667). He narrates from Mu'awiyah bin Tha'labah, from Abu Dharr, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali: "Whoever obeys me has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys me has disobeyed Allah; and whoever obeys Ali has obeyed me, and whoever disobeys Ali has disobeyed me."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hasan bin Amr is "thiqah", but the chain up to him contains Yahya bin Ya'la al-Aslami, who is "da'if", of no standing (laysa bi-shay'), and "mudtarib al-hadith" (inconsistent in hadith).
